VanAmersfoort was one of a group of 22, seven from the Blyth area who travelled to Haiti in April with Mission to Haiti Canada. She has made seven trips to Haiti, but this was the first since the disaster. She was the guest speaker for the General United Church Women’s meeting on Thursday, May 27. The youth group had made over $4,000 with their spaghetti supper and silent auction and, along with the pupils of East Wawanosh Public School, collected boxes of Teddy Bears which were sent to Haiti. Her group sponsors 180 children in Haiti, at a cost of $35 a month, and the over-400 children in that area cannot attend school, unless it has a cement roof, and most do not have that now. They meet outside wherever possible She showed slides of the area and work being done, especially the cross on the massive grave that is covered with black ribbons. 1.5 million people have been displaced. Those who made that trip were specialists and the medical team saw 800 people in five days, even one little boy who lost both arms and legs. They distributed beans and rice made up into 350 packages, which would feed four to six people for a week. Construction work is all done by hand and the bridge to their mission was destroyed so it will take many months to rebuild, especially with the rainy season. Everyone enjoyed the snacks prepared by Nancy Folkard following her presentation. President Gloria Dow welcomed Joanne and all those present and read an article on home. Connie Shiell and Kim Walker conducted the worship on mission and partnership. Kathleen and Emily Stennett and Jessica Procter entertained with piano solos. Their meditation was on, “We are travelling on a Journey.” Camp Site Day was announced for Camp Bimini for Monday, June 7 and the UCW group will cater to the Grade 8 graduation banquet on June 25. A donation will be given to the Mission to Haiti Canada group to help further their work. The meeting closed with the UCW benediction. When you need to get the job done ~ Call us! The group was met by John, Bill and Bradley Haines. John Haines gave them a brief history of the farm and then members split into two groups. They explained the feeding program and how it varies from one barn and group of cattle to the next. The components of the feed do not change though, they feed all Charolais-cross heifers that are bought in as calves and as yearlings. They control how many times there are pulls on the slates and antibiotics are administered. Each heifer is tagged on arrival by the month that they arrived so that they are never shipping over-30-month cattle. All cattle are shipped on the rail. After walking through the barns, members finished in the commodity coverall and wrapped up with a snack provided by Hazel Haines. The next meeting will be July 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Greg Higgins’. The council noted that the transit service was now a duplicate of one offered by the South West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). Still to be decided is what to do with the gas tax funds that had been received from the province to help support the service. Councillors agreed to request a presentation by LHIN officials. “We should ask LHIN why they started a service where there was already a duplicate,” suggested Jim Nelemans, deputy-mayor. *** Council agreed to host a night at the Blyth Festival at a cost of $400.
