THE EDITOR,For a relatively-small communityof communities, we sure seem tohave our share of controversy and sensitive issues, don’t we? Are other rural areas facing the same onslaught of challenges? Arthur Black’s column in the May 20 issue inspired this Letter to the Editor. His column headline reminded me of the lyrics, “Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right. here I am stuck in the middle with you”. I'm thinking that the YOU, may be a reference to taxpayers generally, but in this fire protection/first responder debate, specifically to the people of Hullettand Auburn who caused a commonsense solution to a problem created,in part, by a provincial bureaucracy far removed from the rural realities and geography of Huron County. It’s interesting that Keith Roulston’s editorial on May 20 entitled, “Let’s Just Talk” was a poignant call to action, sound advice apparently not initially taken by either councils in North/Central Huron, until the people took a more direct and forceful approach. But this issue may simply be another indication that unless the people are prepared to stand up and be counted, government (whether local, provincial, or federal) will continueto make decisions directed to us, all in the name of making decisions for us. Consideration for safety and a common-sense solution appears to have taken a back seat to winning a position (or was it simply about the money?). As Roulston pointed out in his column, “it took public reaction to budge the two councils from their entrenched positions” and find a reasonable compromise. But it should never have gotten that far. The decision in the first place, related to protection of thesecommunities, if indeed taken by theOntario Fire Marshal’s office, seemto be in contravention of the Marshal’s own mission statement. And, if the decision related to municipal fire coverage responsibility was a bad one, as it turned out to be, local government should have challenged it, or at the least made the decision at the local level that they ultimately arrived at with some encouragement from the people. Congratulations to those people who stood up for what was right, and for their entitlement to reasonable family and property protection. Ithink we need to pay more, not less, attention to the actions of thoseempowered to make decisions on our behalf. We shouldn’t expect government (municipal councils included) to be perfect, but we expect them to be accountable to the people – all the people. Governing decision-making must not be allowed to get more and more removed from the people. This was an example where people paid attention, pulled it back and made a positive difference. Greg Sarachman, Blyth. THE EDITOR, We would like to thank The Citizen staff for bringing our attention to Central Huron’s plan to have the Central Huron Fire Department cover all of North Hullett because of its dispute with North Huron. We would also like to send out a big thank you to the committee that formed to fight for our safety. They worked very hard and deserve a lot of credit for the eventual agreement. It is greatly appreciated. The Penfound Family. THE EDITOR, My name is Patrick Donnelly and I am one of the enthusiastic young summer students here at the Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol. I am looking forward to working hard to preserve and display the fantastic achievements of our community over the years. My tasks this summer are to plan and organize a celebration for the 35th anniversary of the dedication of the Historic Gaol as a National Historic Site. I will also assist with a small exhibit in the Governor’s House. It will profile the hard work and perseverance of a group of volunteers from our community who saved the the building from partial demolition and established the attraction we all enjoy so much today. I would greatly appreciate the help of our community to locate any relevant pictures, artifacts, documents or experiences relating to this era in the history of the Huron Historic Gaol. A specific time of interest is the Children’s Aid Society’s use of the Governor's House premises from 1968, the closure in 1972 and the story of those who worked to save the Historic Gaol and secure its dedication as a National Historic Site in 1975.
