The Citizen, 2010-06-10, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2010. Eight members of the Brussels United Church Women (UCW) met at the Manse on June 1 for lunch. Pastor Sandra Cable welcomed everyone and asked the blessing. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Joan Bernard. Isabelle Wheeler gave the treasurer’s report. The group will assist with registration for any children going to United Church camp. The UCW will transfer $2,000 to Board of Stewards and $500 to the Mission and Service Fund. Rene Richmond read the names of the shut-ins and each member delivered a flower and visited with them following the meeting. Mothers’ Influence was the theme of the May meeting of the Brussels UCW. The evening began with a potluck supper, enjoyed by about 34 members and guests. Pastor Sandra Cable welcomed all and grace was sung. Pastor Sandra was in charge of the worship part of the meeting. Joan Bernard led with the call to worship followed by a hymn, The Servant Song, Betty Campbell accompanying at the piano. Joan read scripture from Titus 2: 1-5. Pastor Sandra read an article on Mother’s Day, how it has become so commercialized. Pastor Sandra spoke of how special her grandmother was in her life, how she stayed at home, loved her family dearly as she was raised by her grandmother when her parents died when she was 18 months old. She spoke of living on a farm and how busy her mother was raising six children, born in seven years, but each knew she loved them. Pastor Cable read “Memories of a Childhood Past” followed by a poem, Praise to the Women of My Journey, by Rev. Melissa Bowers. Joan closed the service, then showed pictures and told all about her recent trip to China. It was very interesting and informative. Weather prevented them from making a stop in Japan. China has a very high population number, pollution and smog are a big problem there. Nelva Scott chaired the business. Isabelle Wheeler gave the treasurer’s report. The next UCW meeting will be September 7 at the church. Warm weather is in the air, and that makes children’s thoughts turn to swimming, to endless summer days, to mornings spent wasting away the days and to books and reading? The TD Summer Reading Club is hoping to inspire and engage young readers with their “Welcome to the Jungle” theme, which includes books, games, crafts, songs and prizes held at libraries across Huron County, including Blyth and Brussels libraries this summer. Put together by Katie Mathonia and Stacie Van Miltenburg, the program will be held 17 times a week across the 12 county libraries. By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Legion Branch 218 was very quiet last week with many of the normal activities on hiatus for the summer. The Cadet Corp has finished up its year and many of the Cadets will now head off to camp when school finishes. Cadets return in September, so if you have a young person between 12 and 18, think about it over the summer, maybe it is something they would be interested in. The Friday night suppers are over for the summer, but there are still several catering events on the calendar for the members of the Brussels Legion. There are three fish fry events coming up and the Legion’s annual Brussels Cemetery Decoration service on the last Sunday of the month.
