The Citizen, 2010-06-03, Page 19THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2010. PAGE 19. Mark Breckenridge came homefrom the Kingsbrae Garden Sculpture competition with People’sChoice last year, so he’s pulling outall the stops this year. The welder-by-trade has beenmaking sculptures out of metal and steel through his second business -Hac ‘n Wac - for approximately fouryears, but has been doing it own hisown for 10 years. His current bid for success at thecompetition is a life-size bald eagle
made entirely of metal, some
recycled, some new.
“I’ve put in more than 100 hours
on it,” he said. “I’ve used rebar,
some steel and some stainless steel.”
The eagle, which stands nearly
three feet off its stone base tall and
has a wingspan of nearly six feet,
will be transported to the
competition in a few weeks.
Held in Saint Andrews, NewBrunswick, the competition featuresa wide variety of sculptures, with theonly rules being that the sculpturehas to be at least three feet tall andweigh less than 1,000 pounds.
The competition is in its second
year according to Breckenridge, and
he feels good about this year’s entry,
since he did well in the previous year
with a more natural piece called
Silver Maple.
“Last year I had a 12-foot tall
maple tree that won people’s choice,
but it didn’t sell,” he said. “So this
year I’m hoping the eagle will sell,
it’s smaller, and the competition isheld near the American border, sothere might be more of a market forit.”While proud of his currentmasterpiece, Breckenridge usually
focuses on smaller and less time
consuming items because he finds
they have more of a market.
“The [competition pieces] are
really involved and expensive,” he
said. “The smaller things are less
expensive and can work better for
people on a budget.”
Final judgings at the competition
will be held on June 12.
