The Citizen, 2010-06-03, Page 18PAGE 18. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2010.Pentecost Sunday at Londesborough United ChurchMay 23 was Pentecost Sunday, aspecial event in the faith community,is celebrated on the 50th day afterEaster. Receiving the Spirit was thetheme of the service atLondesborough United Church.Terry Fletcher chose as the morn-
ing’s scripture reading, Acts 2: 1-21,
the story of how the disciples and
other followers of Christ were filled
with the Holy Spirit. The senior
choir sang the anthem, “Onward
Joyful Christians”.
During the children’s time at the
front of the church, Terry told them,
in simple terms, the Pentecost story.
He explained how a wind came into
the room where Christ’s followerswere gathered. Suddenly each ofthem was able to speak a new lan-guage. This wind was the Spirit ofGod and He wanted them to go to allforeign lands and tell others aboutHim and His love. Now they could
speak in those foreign languages.
Terry showed them two disciples
(or balloons). The children realized
the balloons needed to be filled with
air and let go. Once filled, the bal-
loons became somewhat transparent.
As Terry explained the disciples
filled with the Spirit showed their
faith to the world by their actions.
The empty balloons needed to be
filled again. The children werereminded that disciples of God canbe refilled by coming to church to berefueled with faith.Every year since the Israelitesescaped from Egypt they celebratedwith a festival on the 50th day after
the flight. That was why the disci-
ples and others were gathered
together. These people became the
first missionaries showing their faith
by their actions, God’s language of
love. The Spirit only asks one to do
God’s will, to let their faith be trans-
parent through their actions.
It was fitting that on Pentecost
Sunday, Londesborough United
should be celebrating Confirmation.Three young men declared their faithin God by becoming members of theUnited Church of Canada andLondesborough United. DamianRiley-Cronk, Kyle Pollard andAdam Westerhout, supported by
their parents or grandparents, were
welcomed into the Londesborough
faith community.
June 6 is the Sunday school
Promotion and Award Sunday to be
followed by a Strawberry Social.
Everyone is invited to attend.
The Official Board thanks every-
one who helped in any way with the
yard sale held on May 22. Thanks to
those efforts, $1,100 was raised thatmight help with the new basementfloor being installed in July.
The Londesborough Happy Gang
Seniors held their May get together
at the Londesborough Community
Hall on Wednesday, May 26.
Following their usual potluck meal,
they welcomed guest speaker, Jackie
Rader of Zurich.
Jackie gave a slide presentation
and talk about her recent trip to
Kenya. She went there to do mission
work and raised funds beforehand to
assist children and their families in
one of the poor villages. She paid for
her own expenses and all the monies
donated to her project were used as
she felt they would be most benefi-
cial. Once in Africa she purchased
food, school books and uniforms.
Education will, in time, reap the
most rewards for a struggling village
or family.
Jackie recognized villagers could
not afford clean water and were
drinking and bathing and cooking
with contaminated water. A system
of gutters along roofs with barrels to
gather the runoff was established.
Now home in Canada she continues
to sponsor a three-year-old orphan
boy. In September, Jackie will return
to Africa, with her mother this time,
to enact what small changes they can
to help an impoverished people.
The Happy Gang Seniors will
meet again at Huronlea in Brussels
on June 8. Gladys Van Egmond will
be on hand with them to offer musi-
cal entertainment.
The final gathering of the seniors
group until September will be on
June 30. It will be a cold supper at
6:30 p.m. Meat will be purchased by
the group. Persons whose last names
begin with the letters A to M should
bring along a dish to share for first
course. Letters N to Z are to bring
desserts to share. There will also be
a guest speaker that evening.
