Cadets inspected; new executive installed Auburn WI meets in May Thirteen members and two guests were present on May 20 at the Auburn Community Hall for the monthly meeting of the Auburn Women’s Institute. President Erma Cartwright opened with the Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and O’ Canada. Following this she gave a reading entitled, “Using Antiques for Home Decorating.” Gwen Bidwell called on Marita Oudshoorn, a WI member and leader of Wawanosh 4H Club to introduce two of the girls, Reba and Ellen Jefferson, who presented an interesting slide presentation and commentary of the various projects taken this year. This club has five leaders with 14- 15 members, which includes two boys. The registration fee is $60 for the year and members can participate in as many projects as they wish. Later on a motion was approved to give the 4H Club a donation. The minutes of the last meeting and treasurer’s report were approved. Roll call was answered by members bringing articles for the London Children’s Hospital. An invitation was received from Dungannon Institute to attend their meeting on Tuesday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Jean Errington. We have appreciated everyone’s support over the season and hopefully we will return in the fall. We will be looking for Comrades to take a turn organizing the meal, so think about it over the summer and let the Branch know if anyone is interested in taking a turn. Friday night was joint installation of officers for Brussels Branch 218 and Seaforth Branch 156 hosted by the Seaforth Branch. There were 10 comrades from our branch attending and installed by Deputy District Commander Stew Taylor of Hensall. A social time and light lunch was enjoyed by all following the completion of installation. Attendingfrom Branch 218 was President JohnLowe, First Vice Deb Cann, SecondVice, Cecil Moore, Sergeant-at-Arms Lisa Glanville, Executive members Eric Ross, Mabel Glanville Catrina Josling and Wanda Walker. Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald attending the training, organization and development seminar at the Goderich Branch 109 on Saturday. All branches attending had to present a 15-minute presentation on a pre-assigned topic concerning the Legion. Branch 218’s subject was fundraising. It was a very interesting and informative seminar with grassroots ideas being presented in a format everyone could understand. The Saturday afternoon euchre had eight tables of players hoping to be winners. The first-place team of John and Iola Subject stole the day with eight lone hands to have thehigh score of 90. The second prizewent to couple George and GloriaLove with 75 points and the thirdprize to couple Tom and Eileen Sloan with 72 points. The low prize was a tie and prizes went to pairs Viola and Ruth and Vera Lindner and Reta Davidson each with 48 points. The prizes for the most lone handsfor the women went to HazelMcGonigle and for the men FrankHulley. Euchre is every two weeks.The Sunday night dance had a great crowd of over 115 enjoy the music of the John Heaman Band. The night was made extra special as the crowd helped celebrate the birthday of our very populardoorman Howard Hackwell. Howardcelebrated his 80th birthday on May24. Kitchen helpers Jo-Ann, Judyand Mabel surprised the birthday boy and Audrey with cake for all those attending the dance. Happy birthday was led by John Heaman and everyone had a fun time.
