AgricultureBrussels Livestock report Beef veal, fed steers and heifers sell high Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending May 20 were 2,557 cattle, 868 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold $1 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $92 to $96 with sales to $98. Second cut sold $89 to $92. Cows sold on a strong active trade. On Thursday veal calves sold steady. Beef veal sold $2 to $3 higher. Light lambs sold easier. Heavy lambs, sheep and goats sold steady. On Friday calves sold on a higher market. Yearlings sold on a strong active trade. There were 187 steers on offer. Joseph M. Top quality stocker heifers under 300 lbs., sold $92 to $126; 300 - 399 lbs., $96 to $127; 400 - 499 lbs., $110 to $125; 500 - 599 lbs., $101 to $119; 600 - 699 lbs., $97.50 to $108; 700 - 799 lbs., $94.50 to $106; 800 - 899 lbs., $90 to $104.50; 900 lbs. and over, $90.50 to $98.50.f On Saturday, May 8 was the 12th District 8 Ambassador of the Fairs competition and it was held at the Dungannon Agricultural Hall. There were a total of eight contestants for the competition this year, representing the different fairs located within District 8. Contestants were from Brussels, Clinton, Howick-Turnberry, Listowel, Milverton, Mitchell, Seaforth and Stratford. They attended different workshops throughout the day and the Dungannon Agricultural Society prepared them supper prior to the competition beginning at 7 p.m. Each girl had an interview with a panel of three judges in the afternoon and as well as delivered a two-to-three minute prepared speech and answer an impromptu question. Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador Jolanda Smith was awarded the friendship award that is voted on by the ambassadors. The award is given to someone who is friendly, outgoing and compassionate to their fellows contestants. Jory Willits, Howick-Turnberry Ambassador was this year’s first runner-up, with the winner being Erica Riddell, who represents the Milverton Fair. In attendance from the Brussels Agricultural Society were President Jeff Cardiff with his wife Cathy and Nicole Noble, Ambassador Co- ordinator. The Brussels Agricultural Society would like to congratulate Jolanda on a job well done and on her award. Jolanda’s next competition is in August at the CNE. TWINE SEASON IS HERE!
