ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ERIC COATES
Several local members of the
Blyth-area Serious FUN! Theatre
Group made a serious splash at this
year’s Kiwanis Festival in Stratford.
There were many new competitors
this year in the Speech Arts category
at the Kiwanis Festival in Stratford,
and once again, Serious FUN!
students had a lot of fun and a lot of
success.
Now three years running, a
Serious FUN! student has won the
Elementary Drama Finals with
Emma Dunlop in 2008, Alexandra
Aitken in 2009 and now Loreena
Homan in 2010.
In addition a Serious FUN! student
has also won the Senior Drama
Finals three years running, with
Samantha Edwards in 2008, Kelsey
Falconer in 2009 and now Ally
Connelly in 2010.
The Silver Lining Trophy (overall
winner of speech arts), has also now
been awarded to a member of the
Serious FUN! Theatre Group for
three years running, beginning with
Regan Bezaire in 2008, Kathryn
Peach in 2009 and now Sadie
Chalmers in 2010. This is also the
third year running that a Serious
FUN! student has been chosen to
represent Stratford at Provincials for
Speech Arts and Drama, starting
with Samantha Edwards in 2008,
Kelsey Falconer and Kathryn Peach
in 2009 and now Sadie Chalmers in
2010.
The provincials will be held in
June and there Chalmers will
compete with a 15-minute solo
recital comprised of two poems, a
selection from Little Women, and a
monologue as Lady MacBeth.
Besides taking the Silver Lining
Trophy (overall winner of speech
arts), Sadie also received a first place
and advancement to the finals for her
Modern Drama Test Piece as Anne
Frank, a second place for her
Modern Drama Monologue from
Lulu Street and a second place for
her Drama at Stratford Monologue.
Adjudicator Mary Blendick’s
comments were that Chalmers was
“very dramatic” and that she
“captured the ‘spirit’ of each
character.”
Chalmers also competed in an
improvisation duo with another
Blyth resident, Kathryn Peach. The
two girls had to create a scene in two
minutes, based on a first line such as
“excuse me, could you please
remove your hat?” The girls placed
first and advanced to the finals.

Big winners
Local girls Sadie Chalmers, left, and Kathryn Peach, were
honoured at the annual Kiwanis Festival in Stratford earlier
this month. Chalmers won the Silver Lining Trophy for the
overall winner of the speech arts and she has also been
chosen to represent Stratford at the provincial
championships, an honour that went to Peach last year.
Peach participated in an improvisation competition with
Chalmers as well, with the duo placing first after their two-
minute scene. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
