THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2010.SportsBlyth U14 girls go undefeated in first two The Blyth U14 Howson Hurricane Girls took on Bayfield on May 13, but were unable to overcome their adversaries, playing to a 4-4 draw. Blyth struck early with a goal from Mackenzie Nesbitt, assisted by Megan Hoggart, but Bayfield would rally back and end the half ahead 2-1. Blyth came out to the second half swinging, with Nesbitt getting her second goal, assisted by Holly Howson. Hoggart followed with her own marker, and, after two Bayfield goals, Nesbitt would complete her hat trick to bring the score to its final 4-4. Earlier in the season, the U14 girls took on Clinton II on May 6, beating them with a score of 5-4. Clinton scored the first goal from a corner kick. Blyth returned fire, with Hoggart tying the score off an assist by Melissa Van Schaik. Clinton stormed back, scoring two unanswered goals, but Blyth pulled together to have Leanne Plunkett and Nesbitt assisting on Hoggart’s second goal. To start the second, Charlene Schramm relieved Blyth goaltender Marion Studhalter and the change lit a fire under the Blyth team. The girls scored back to back goals, the second for Van Schaik, and a third for Hoggart, making for her second hat trick of the season. Clinton continued to tie up the game, responding to the first two goals and then tying Mackenzie Nesbitt’s late-game goal, scored by Holly Howson to end the match 5-5. After the final whistle, however, the referee called one Clinton goal back due to offside, giving the win to Blyth. The Tuesday night ladies opening golf and supper was limited to only a supper and an inside putting contest and the participation was fantastic. Forty-one gals came out and enjoyed a chicken and rice buffet with all the fixings. Pat Mathers was the lucky winner of the door prize and Mary Houghton putted her way to victory in the fun, but challenging contest. Cheryl and Julie welcomed Amber back in the kitchen and she did a great job. The Wednesday morning seniors had only 12 golfers out on a cold and drizzly day. Jamie Sanderson was the low net with Ray Walker placing second and Bill Brown, third. Harry George shot a 40 for the low gross and Ray and Bill tied for second. Thursday the club witnessed an all-day rain cancelling the men’s night. Friday couples night had about 20 golfers getting geared up for the first fun “Happy Face” scramble to be held Friday, May 28. Sunday, May 16 the club held its spring barbecue. Around 600 hungry golfers and guest enjoyed a delicious ham and beef barbecue. It was great to see the golf course busy and all the smiling faces. Mary Houghton the barbecue chair and all her volunteers did a fantastic job running and organizing this very successful day. Thanks to all the volunteers. OUT OF BOUNDS The Wingham Golf and Curling Club is holding a “free driving range” day for all female golfers on Tuesday, May 25. Just come into the pro shop and register and try our great game.
