Amazing, truly amazing. Check
out Victoria Square, the main ball
park, and you’ll think you must have
been away a while.
From a construction site on Friday
to a complete building, flower beds
included, by Saturday night was a
marvel. I’m not sure how much sleep
John Richmond lost getting the plan
all in line, but we certainly
appreciate the details that he had
covered and hope he slept well onSaturday night, resting on a job verywell done.Saturday morning the Optimists, the lumber, the various supplies andthe volunteers arrived, all ready toroll and very quickly the workbegan. The assigned duties were
completed with amazing efficiency,
considering all these folks did not
come with carpentry papers or work
usually as part of a construction
crew. Well done everyone!
The Optimist Club’s project is a
fine example of people working for a
unified cause. The red roof of the
cement block building (on the
northwest corner) is a beacon to the
future all ready to serve our people
at the sports events, so important to
life.
Recycling took a new turn on
Saturday as well, when over 20picnic tables were produced from thebleachers that had served theirpurpose well for many years. Goodthinking guys. For those of us whocould just sit back and watch, I’msure the Optimist Club could use alittle more cash to finish the project.A phone call to any member of a
cheque in the mail would go to good
use and show support for their fine
work.
Improvement to this land named
on the original maps of Brussels as
Victoria Square, links our past with
the future. Life is good, but only
because of the people.
Murray McArter (Crusher) had
our full attention on Saturday night.
Family and friends gathered at his
second home, the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre to
mark the end of this stage of his life.
Thirty years of waiting, for the time
for ice making, grass cutting,
bookings, fixing, pool attention, ball
diamond details and people, people
and more people.
As the years went by, recreation
changed, the job evolved and so didyou. Good for you Murray McArteryou’ve served our community wellin your 30 years as arena manager.Even Wattie would say you did usproud and we all wish you aretirement of your dreams.Good food and good company sentpeople away from the United Church
on Sunday evening with big
smiles on their faces. Food seems
to bring out the best in people,
so everyone wins when
fundraisers involve food, cooking or
eating.
The convertibles and motorcycles
were out in large numbers on
Sunday enjoying a long-awaited
warm day to enjoy the country.
Enjoy your week.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

The Branch was saddened again
this week with the passing of a
veteran member of the Branch.
Comrade Bill Steadwell passed
away on Tuesday evening with his
family near. Our condolences to his
grandchildren, Natalie and Preston,
who were here from Utah and to his
special friend Olive Ferguson. The
Branch held a memorial service in
the Veterans’ Lounge on Thursday
evening with 20 Comrades and over
20 friends and neighbours attending.
The service was led by Padre Sandra
Cable.
Comrade Bill was a quiet
gentlemen who always had a
pleasant way and smiling face. He
supported the Branch by his
attendance at many fish fry events,
Friday night suppers and was a
regular attendee at the Sunday night
dances. The Sunday night dance
crowd celebrated his 90th birthday
in March with cake for all. Our
deepest sympathies to all his family
and friends.
The Friday night supper of baked
pork chops was enjoyed by a group
of about 35. This week will be
meatballs and rice.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 10 tables of players hoping to be
the winners. The first-place team
was Russell and Jim with 80 points.
Second place was George and
Deanna Bacon with 70 points.
Third place was a three-way tie
for teams Delores Howatt
and Lillian Appleby, John
and Catharine and Helen Dobson
and Mabel Willis. The low prize
went to Joann MacDonald and
Dorothy Carter. Lone-hand prizes
went to Marie Stewart and Tom
Sloan.
The first fish fry held at the
Branch had a small attendance of
just 110.
The fish fry crew were Jim Brown,
Sandra Josling, Calvin Semple,
Barrie Currie, Lisa Glanville,
Sharon Robbins and Norm Dobson.
The inside helpers were Deb Cann,
Penny and Mabel Glanville.
The Sunday night dance crowd
had the largest crowd of 2010 with
over 105 enjoying the music of the
Country Versatiles. The crowd was
also saddened to hear of the passing
of two of its regular attendees, Bill
Steadwell and Alf Nichol.

Thank You
Sydney (granddaughter of Mervyn and
Donna Bauer), would like to thank everyone
who helped make our golf day a success,
even with the horrible weather. Grandma is
not ordering the weather for next year’s
event. Sydney has had Juvenile Diabetes
since she was 17 months old. Thanks to
Monoway Farms, MGM Townsend Tire,
Cooks of Walton, Margaret and Ralph for all
your donations. Special thanks to the
Bremner family and everyone else for
coming and even playing golf. Thank you
Dave and Karen for all your help and
suggesting we rent the hall. Special thank
you to our family for making this a success
and thanks to Aunt Kim for coming home
from Ottawa. We raised $2,000.00 for Juvenile Diabetes. Sydney and
Grandma did an early clean-up of the ditches and with the bottle returns
received $40.00 for Juvenile Diabetes. Make sure you come out to our BBQ
on the 28th and 29th in Brussels at McCutcheon Motors lot. All proceeds to
Juvenile Diabetes. (I will be here), Sydney.
