Senior Public Health Promoter Janice Dunbar says Huron County is the most agriculturally productive county in Ontario. Even though there is an abundance of food grown here, not all people can access it. Getting safe, nutritious and affordable food is much harder for some members of our community than others. If you don’t make very much money, having enough food, especially healthy food, can be a real challenge. Dunbar says children are particularly vulnerable. “The importance of a healthy diet for children is well-documented and a great concern in the face of rising rates of childhood obesity.” Only 40 per cent of Huron County residents eat vegetables and fruit 5 times a day or more. Only 37 per cent of Huron County residents havehealthy body weights. A healthy diethigh in vegetables and fruit can helpus reach and maintain healthy bodyweights, preventing cardiovasculardisease, diabetes and some cancers. The Kitchen Table Conversations are free and open to anyone interested in ideas about improving access to healthy foods. The health unit will help cover costs like transportation and childcare for participants who need it. These evenings will be held in Exeter on Tuesday, May 18, 7 – 8:30 p.m., at The Belongers, 63 Main Street; Goderich, Wednesday, May 19, 7 – 8:30 p.m., Goderich Public Library, 52 Montreal Street; Seaforth, Tuesday, May 25, 7 – 8:30 p.m., Seaforth Legion, 123 Main Street, South; Wingham, Wednesday, May 26, 7 – 8:30 p.m., Wingham Public Library, 281 Edward Street; Clinton, Thursday, May 27, 7 – 8:30 p.m., OMAFRA Building, 100 Don Street.
