residents face in getting healthy
foods.
Senior Public Health Promoter
Janice Dunbar says Huron County is
the most agriculturally productive
county in Ontario. Even though there
is an abundance of food grown here,
not all people can access it. Getting
safe, nutritious and affordable food
is much harder for some members of
our community than others. If you
don’t make very much money,
having enough food, especially
healthy food, can be a real
challenge.
Dunbar says children are
particularly vulnerable. “The
importance of a healthy diet for
children is well-documented and a
great concern in the face of rising
rates of childhood obesity.”
Only 40 per cent of Huron County
residents eat vegetables and fruit 5
times a day or more. Only 37 per
cent of Huron County residents havehealthy body weights. A healthy diethigh in vegetables and fruit can helpus reach and maintain healthy bodyweights, preventing cardiovasculardisease, diabetes and some cancers. The Kitchen Table Conversations
are free and open to anyone
interested in ideas about improving
access to healthy foods. The health
unit will help cover costs like
transportation and childcare for
participants who need it.

tastes of spring right now. There areno fresh local salad greens orasparagus on many kitchen tables and we want to talk about ways tochange that.”To register contact Laura Armstrong at 1-877-837-6143 ext. 2245 or e-mail atlarmstrong@huroncounty.caPAGE 28. Big impact
The rain came and the winds swirled on Saturday, even bringing snow in some parts of Huron
County and resulting in some damage in the area, like this tree that met its demise on
Moncrieff Road, just north of Blyth. (Vicky Bremner photo)
