Canadian theatre icon Patricia
Hamilton joins the Blyth Festival,
completing casting for the 2010
season acting company.
Artistic Director Eric Coates is
thrilled with this year’s company,
adding that the addition of Patricia
Hamilton makes the casting coup
official.
“We have been extremely
fortunate with casting this year,”
says Coates. “The talent in the room
is simply staggering.”
Hamilton is perhaps best known
for her recurring role as Rachel
Lynde on Road to Avonlea – a spin-
off series following memorable
characters from L.M. Montgomery’s
Anne of Green Gables popularized
by the original television mini-series
in the 1980s.
Hamilton’s complete theatre
credits are extensive. Last
year marked her 12th season with
the Shaw Festival, playing such
roles as Anna in A Month in the
Country, After Turgenev,Clara in
Lillian Groag’s The Magic Fire and
Mrs. Helseth in Henrik
Ibsen’s Rosmersholm. She has also
performed at such theatres as the
Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Calgary,
Canadian Stage, the Manitoba
Theatre Company/National Arts
Centre, the American Shakespeare
Festival in Stratford, Connecticut,
the National Shakespeare Festival in
San Diego, the Edinburgh Festival
and the Old Vic.
In addition, she completed voice-
over work for an animated version of
Anne of Green Gables and the voice
of the narrator in the CBC
adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s
The Blind Assassin.
Hamilton is the recipient of many
awards for her contributions to
Canadian arts, including a Brenda
Donohue Award, Dora Award, Genie
Award, Gemini Award and Silver
Ticket Award.
Although Hamilton’s Canadian
stage and television career spans
nearly 50 years, she has never before
appeared on the Blyth Festival stage.
She makes her Blyth Festival debut
in Paul Ciufo’s witty murder
mystery,A Killing Snow, which runs
from June 23 - Aug. 13. Hamilton
also appears in Pearl Gidley by Gary
Kirkham, running from July 28 to
Sept. 4.

Blyth native’s book printed for U.S.
Hot off the press: U.S. rights to
The Happy Baker have been sold to
Harlequin. The American edition
will be available in stores
nationwide in October 2010.
Author Erin Bolger will be featured
at BookExpo America (BEA) from
May 25-27 and is ready to take on
America.
“I’m extremely excited about
being part of the Harlequin Non-
Fiction family. They know my
demographic better than anyone. I
feel this is the perfect fit for The
Happy Baker book in the United
States and I can’t wait to share my
book”.
Since being published in Canada
in April 2009 and appearing on
CBC’s The Dragon Den Bolger has
travelled across Canada and abroad
to Paris, France promoting the book
and sharing her recipes. The book
has received media attention and
acclaim from papers from Calgary
to Montreal to Ottawa to
Toronto, and even to her hometown
of Blyth, and she has appeared on a
variety of television shows from
Breakfast Television, a regular guest
spot on Cityline to eTalk and The
Steven and Chris show on CBC as
well as several national magazines.
Bolger is constantly creating new
recipes, some inspired by the latest
Hollywood break-ups: “You
Are Lucky I Didn’t Rip Your Rum
Balls Off”, was inspired by Jesse
James and is the ultimate
emotional baking recipe for Sandra
Bullock and “Indiscretion Surprise,
Almond Sugar Cookies” is related
to the Tiger Woods scandal. For

Bolger will be at the BookExpo

with the support of association
partners including the Association
of American Publishers (AAP) and
the American Booksellers
Association (ABA), BEA is
recognized for the media attention
it brings to upcoming books as well
as for the notable authors it attracts
to the convention itself.

Practice safety first at garage sales
The Huron County Health Unit
wants to remind people the next
time you are planning to go garage-
saling or hold one yourself, to think
about safety.
Everyone holding a garage sale is
legally responsible for making sure
that products sold, whether new or
used, are safe. It is important to only
sell items that are in good condition.
Damaged articles should be thrown
out.
Before selling a product at a
garage sale, check with the
manufacturer or Health Canada to
see if it has been recalled and if the
problem has been corrected.
If it has been recalled and the
problem has not been or cannot be
corrected, don’t sell it. Destroy
it so it cannot be used by anyone
else.
Check for consumer product
recalls at: www.healthcanada.gc.
ca/cps-recalls.
The following are some products
that must meet safety requirements
under Canadian regulations: baby
gates, baby walkers (banned),
car seats, children’s jewellery,
children’s sleepwear, cosmetics,
cribs, garden torches, hockey
helmets and face protectors, lawn
darts (banned), playpens,
strollers, toys and toys with
magnets.
Other items that could also pose a
safety hazard are drawstrings on
children’s clothing, helmets (other
than hockey helmets), infant bath
seats and bath rings and window
blinds.
If you aren’t sure whether a
product is safe, don’t sell it, give it
away or buy it. Most importantly
don’t use it with a child. Make sure
your garage sale items are not just a
great buy, but also safe.
