Administrator Clerk-Treasurer Nancy Michie told councillors at their May 4 meeting that the plan drawn up by Huron Landscaping would require more than $50,000 to implement. Some plants have to be replaced, walkways redone and structures removed. The large central flower bed will cost $13,000 to $15,000 to renovate. Noting that there was only $2,500 in the budget for work on the garden this year, Michie said “We had no idea it would be like this.” Michie suggested that perhaps the work could be spread out over several years to make it more affordable. “Let’s use a bit of common sense on this and not spend $50,000,” said Councillor Bill Thompson. But Councillor Paul Gowing reminded council that the park was a centrepiece of Belgrave. At Deputy-Mayor Jim Nelemans’ suggestion, council agreed to meet at the park at 7 p.m. prior to its May 18 meeting to take a look at the park before making any decision.
