Morris-Turnberry councillors got
a shock when they heard the
estimate of the cost to revamp the
Belgrave Heritage Park.
Administrator Clerk-Treasurer
Nancy Michie told councillors at
their May 4 meeting that the plan
drawn up by Huron Landscaping
would require more than $50,000
to implement. Some plants have
to be replaced, walkways redone
and structures removed. The
large central flower bed will
cost $13,000 to $15,000 to
renovate.
Noting that there was only $2,500
in the budget for work on the garden
this year, Michie said “We had no
idea it would be like this.”
Michie suggested that perhaps the
work could be spread out over
several years to make it more
affordable.
“Let’s use a bit of common sense
on this and not spend $50,000,” said
Councillor Bill Thompson.
But Councillor Paul Gowing
reminded council that the park was a
centrepiece of Belgrave.
At Deputy-Mayor Jim Nelemans’
suggestion, council agreed to meet at
the park at 7 p.m. prior to its May 18
meeting to take a look at the park
before making any decision.

REV. JOHN ROBERTS
Rev. John Gratton Roberts passed
away peacefully on Thursday, April
29, 2010. John will be remembered
throughout the community as the
Minister of Knox United Church in
Belgrave, and for his ongoing
ministry as a guest preacher in
churches in the area.
John was born in Prestatyn, Wales
in 1928. John’s father passed away
when he was five years old. John and
his two younger brothers James andHerbert were cared for by theirmother and their extended family inPrestatyn. He trained as anelectrician and began work in a localchemical factory when he was calledto preach God’s Word. Theseexperiences made John passionateabout the life of the working manand made him a man of
understanding rather than
judgement.
John graduated from Aberystwyth
Theological College in 1948 and was
ordained that year. John believed
fervently in his God and was a
tireless and devoted servant. He
preached God’s Word with passion
and maintained his beliefs with
integrity.
John married his beloved
companion, Kathleen (Kay) in 1956
and together they had two surviving
children, Howard (1960) and Alison
(1961). John and Kay lost an infant
daughter in childbirth. John adored
his children and grandchildren:
Alexandra, Emma, Ian, Evan and
Rachel.
John and Kay, Howard and Alison
immigrated to Canada in 1967 and
came to Belgrave, which became
home to the Roberts family for the
remainder of John’s life and the
people of Belgrave became their new
family. Following John’s retirement
from Knox United Church in
Belgrave, John and Kay were
welcomed as members of Wingham
United Church, the members of
which have become their extended
spiritual family.
John’s life was celebrated in a
service at Wingham United Church,
on Sunday, May 2 at 7 p.m. The
service was presided over by Rev.
Deian Evans of Dewi Sant (Welsh)
United Church in Toronto. Rev. Dr.
Cerwyn Davies reflected on John’s
Welsh heritage and ministry. Mr.
Ross Procter reminded all present
that this is not the end, but a new
beginning, and Mr. Ron Cook spoke
about John’s commitment to all
within the community. John’s
granddaughter, Alexandra and Mr.
Tom Oliver paid musical tribute with
“The Prayer”. The committal took
place under sunny skies on Monday
morning at Brandon cemetery in
John’s beloved Belgrave.
“Let not your heart be troubled.
Believe in God. In my Father’s
house are many rooms. I have
gone to prepare at place for you.”
(John: 14).
