(Denny Scott photo) Despite the weather, the Wingham Golf and Curling Club had a busy week. The rain with a bit of snow has the course in great shape and the grounds crew, Bruce, Mark and Greg are looking forward to a big year. On Tuesday, May 4 the ladies braved the cold and windy day with approximately 12 girls geared up for their opening ladies’ night on May 11. The Wednesday morning senior men had a good turnout with 29 golfers taking part in their weekly competition. The senior men use the Callaway Handicap System that really helps balance final scoring. Low net and first place went to Bruce Boyd, second was Bob Johnston and third, Ed Daer. The low gross scores were Bruce Boyd’s 51 and Ed Daer with 43. Buff's crew on Thursday night had 31 golfers on a cool breezy night. The winners were closest to the pin, Bill Robinson, longest putt Jason Goodall and hidden scores Mark Foxton, Murray Coghlin (Muzz) and Larry Pellett. The low gross score for the night was 37 by Trevor Hopf. The weather man didn’t co- operate for Friday night’s opening golf and wing night but the wing part of the evening was a huge success. Cheryl, Julie and Trevor served up close to 75 orders (650 wings), a great start for the monthly scheduled wing night to be held the first Friday of every month. Saturday the club hosted a memorial service for Al Godfrey. Between 165 - 175 close friends and family came to pay their respects. Al will certainly be missed at the golf club by the Thursday night golf gang and all the staff. Cheryl, Elizabeth and Trevor with the help of volunteers Maxine Robinson, Gayle Neil, Marilyn Layton, Jan Dauphin and Mary Houghton did a stellar job making sandwiches and serving all the guests. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS It is great to see all the volunteers out early in the year helping wherever they can. Bob Foxton has been spending many hours out working in the flower beds and Cheryl has received lots of help in the kitchen. Members like this can and will make the Wingham Golf and Curling Club successful.
