a main event, gardens can be a beau-
tiful addition to any space.
Gardening, however, can be a dif-
ficult process, and the most impor-
tant tool isn’t shears or a trowel, but
someone to turn to when the going
gets tough.
Rhea Hamilton Seeger has been
gardening for years; since she was
10, and has been writing a gardening
column for The Rural Voice for the
last 20 years and she figures things
out, either on her own or with help.
“I started gardening when I was 10
years old with my father,” she said.“My father was a farm manager andwe got to see a garden done by a
Toronto firm. It was a ‘perfect’ gar-
den, with shrubs set up properly to
protect from the wind, different sea-
son flowers blooming to provide
year-round colour, it was great. Ever
since then I’ve been gardening and
trying to do the same.”
Hamilton Seeger’s columns, now
available on the Huron Home and
Gardens portion of The Citizen’s
website (www.northhuron.on.ca)
provide insights into gardening and
the reason behind many gardening
rules.
“My columns,” Hamilton Seeger
said, “come from my own problems,my own solutions and other people’sproblems.”
Hamilton Seeger quoted one
example, of a friend who had Giant
Hogweed on her property and didn’t
know it.
Giant Hogweed is a noxious weed,
recognized as a public nuisance by
The Township of Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh, as the liquids of the
weed can cause a more severe reac-
tion than poison ivy. It is not an unat-
tractive plant, however, measuring
up to two metres high and displaying
large leaves and flowers, Hamilton
Seeger said the plant has quite an
impact, which is good in a garden.
“[The friend] was getting married, and had found these large, impres-sive plants,” she said. “So she moved
