Over 1,100 tulips beautify couple’s gardenContinued from page 16refers to her husband as “the bulb man” as he is often in charge of any flowers that fall into that category. Tulips are his specialty, but now, in addition to the over 1,100 tulips in the garden, there are also approximately 250 other assorted bulbs in their gardens. In the spring and fall Atkinson is in the garden from six to eight hours a day working, and putting in amodest two hours per day in the summer. The spring and fall are important seasons to any gardener as preparation and preservation take centre stage as the soil rebounds, then prepares for the cold that Huron County is known for. Atkinson says most of her time in the spring is spent edging, digging, planting, cleaning and spreadingmanure and peat moss. In the summer, she is mostly just tidying up and making sure that everything looks the way it should. One of Atkinson’s newest secrets, she says is placing newspaper in the hole she digs before planting a new plant or flower. She said that thenewspaper retains moisture well and attracts worms, retaining moisture for an extended period of time, aiding the growth of the plant. She shreds up the newspaper and then wets it, placing it in the hole before planting a new flower and says that so far it has worked. While the couple’s garden isn’t quite the public park it has been taken for in the past, it is very visible while driving through town. A drive past allows one time to appreciate the hard work that has gone into the years of sculpting this garden. “See us for all your building and renovating needs” 155 Anglesea Street, Goderich 519-524-1778 1-800-667-0357 ❥Decks (Cedar, Trex, Pressure Treated) ❥Fences ❥Sheds ❥Play Centres ❥Patio Stones Get ready for RR#1 39843 LONDESBORO RD., LONDESBOROUGH PHONE/FAX 519-523-9781 LOCATED 500 YARDS WEST OF LONDESBOROUGH ON CTY.
