PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN
Former Auburn resident returns from Afghanistan
Auburn native Michael Schneider
recently returned from his third
tour of duty with the Canadian
Armed Forces, and it left him with
a good feeling about the future.
Schneider’s tour of duty in
Afghanistan was his second in the
country, and the third of his career,
and with no more tours expected,
he is able to look forward, knowing
that the Armed Forces are in good
hands.
“I, and everyone involved, are
really proud of how hard everyone
worked,” he said. “We’re very
proud of the work that every
Canadian has done over there. I
only have a few more years left in
my career, but I’m content in
knowing that there will be
good leaders of the army in the
future.”
Schneider, a Master Corporal in
A company of the Three Platoon,
part of the Princess Patricia
Canadian Light Infantry out of
Edmonton, either led, or acted as a
Head Quarters liaison on patrols in
the area his company was stationed.
“We patrolled an area,
maintaining peace and security for
the local population,” he said. “We
maintained [the locals’] villages for
development.”
Schneider is very happy to be
home, saying it’s ‘awesome’ to be
back on home soil. He also said that
it is nice to be back where the
support comes from.
“The support we have while over
there is just amazing,” he said. “I
know it can be hard for some
people to support why we’re there,
but at the same time, they support
us because we’re Canadians.
“The support that the Canadian
population shows is amazing, I just
hope that it continues through the
end of this mission and for future
missions,” he said.
Schneider said that the real
heroes are the people back home.
“The support we receive is what
makes us able to do our jobs,” he
said. “When I’m away, I know my
family is the real hero. They do the
household stuff, and that keeps my
mind clearer, a little less clouded,
so we can focus on doing or job.”
Schneider is the third of four
children to Dorothy and Jim
Schneider of Auburn.
Dorothy said that it’s wonderful
to have her son home.
“It is really good to have him
home,” she said. “It feels great, we
support him 100 per cent with
whatever he does, but it’s great to
have him back.”By Denny Scott

On the hunt
The annual Auburn community yard sale was held on Saturday, with dozens of homes filling
their driveways with used goods and even more people searching for a good deal. While
thunderstorms spoiled the party soon enough, people had a few hours of shopping before
they got wet. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
ACW receives funds
to fix Highway 21
One of the major routes in Huron
County, Highway 21, will be
receiving a substantial facelift north
of Goderich.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
(ACW) Township recently received
funding for a major resurfacing and
repair project from both the federal
and provincial governments.
At the Ministry of Transportation
of Ontario building on Highway 21,
just north of Saltford, MP and MPP
for Huron-Bruce, Ben Lobb and
Carol Mitchell, respectively, came
together to announce a joint effort
that will see more than $9 million
used for the work, split evenly
between the two governments.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
Township Council reeve Ben Van
Diepenbeek spoke to the assembled
dignitaries and public, stating that
it’s great to see the two governments
working together to make this, and
other works become a reality.
The money will be used by
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh to
upgrade nearly 10 kilometres worth
of road starting just north of
Goderich and ending at
Sheppardton, just short of Nile
Road, including resurfacing and
culvert replacements.
The highway, known as the
Bluewater Highway in ACW,
mostly runs parallel to the
lakeshore, starting in Owen Sound
in the north and running as far south
as Lambton County.
