WE CAN DO IT ALL!
Lions prepare forannual duck race
It’s that time of year again! The
dandelions are making their
presence seen on lawns all over the
area. I offer some theories about
these springtime annuals.
Today’s dandelions have been
genetically altered to have shorter
stems. That way the mower blade
can’t touch the flowers. Or they are
able to sense the mower coming and
bend their bright heads until it
passes. Once the ‘city folk’ have a
few years of this week, country folk
will again get access to non-green
weed killers that actually work on
those dandelions.
There will be a miscellaneous
bridal shower at Londesborough
United Church on Saturday, May 8
at 7:30 p.m. Elizabeth MacGregor,
daughter of Don and Kittie
MacGregor is to be married on June
12. Friends in the community are
invited to come out and offer best
wishes. If you would like more
information, call Yvonne Hoggart.
The Londesborough Lions Club
certainly is showing off their
community involvement these days.
On April 18 many of us enjoyed
their springtime, Old Tyme Country
Breakfast. They hardly had the
dishes put away when they were
getting them out again to serve up a
fish fry at the hall on Saturday
evening.
It proved to be a popular event as
the 375 meals they had planned for
were sold out early and some folk
had to be turned away. The Lions
assisted whit the cooking by
members of the Brussels Legion
who do this type of event regularly.
The Clinton Salvation Army Fire
Relief Fund will benefit from a most
delicious meal.
Now the Londesborough Lions arefinalizing plans for their annualrubber duck race. On May 30 the
little swimmers will be released at
Bev and Helen Wallace’s corner.
Buy your number early as there will
only be 500 ducks in the race.
Have you talked to others in your
work space or home area about the
pending changes to the fire service
in Hullett Township? From the letter
the Municipality of Central Huron
sent out, it seems only a small
number of persons will be heard
from and only if they have pre-
registered with council. Perhaps
some speakers should be selected to
offer concerns. At any rate, you
should consider attending the
meeting at the Londesborough
Community Hall on Monday, May
10 at 7:30 p.m. to hear details. A
strong showing may have an effect
on the results.
HAPPY GANG SENIORS
The Londesborough Happy Gang
Seniors held their April meeting at
the Londesborough Community Hall
on Wednesday,April 28. Following a
potluck meal, the group welcomed
guest speaker, one of
Londesborough’s own native sons,
OPP officer Russell Nesbitt. Seniors
are popular targets for scam artists
and Russell, who works out of the
Goderich Detachment, made many
suggestions to the seniors in
attendance as to how to protect
themselves. He told them to be very
wary of persons wanting to help
them with hydro, gas and water
concerns/deals.
Officer Nesbitt’s time with the
seniors was informal and he spent
much time answering questions
about their concerns. He suggestedfolks need to be suspicious and ifthey are concerned about an issue to
ask many questions and not be afraid
to call the police for help. His
remarks included tips for safety at
home, when travelling and
protection of one’s personal
information. The use and protection
of credit cards is another area
needing awareness.

PEOPLE AROUND
LONDESBORO
On a farm on the 13th concession
in Hullett Township 90 years ago,
Joseph and Maude Webster
welcomed new-born Gladys
Webster (later Caldwell) into the
world.
Born on May 5, 1920, Gladys
attended school at Number 8 Hullett
Township and married Ralph
Caldwell at 23, on October 9, 1943.
Ralph and Gladys had five
children; Anne, Leslie, Wayne,
Stephen and Karen, to whom she
was a “supermom”, a housewife,
and, eventually, a great
grandmother.
In her spare time, Gladys enjoys
reading, and spending time with
family and is a member of the
United Church Women.
Her birthday celebration took
place at Blyth United Church and
was followed by a family dinner at
The Dinner Bell restaraunt in
Clinton. Special guests included
Florence Miller and Helen Klemke.
According to family, it was a
wonderful gathering at the church,
with family, friends and neighbours,
and a wonderful meal filled with
love and fellowship.
The next regular meeting of the
Council of the Municipality of Central
Huron will be held Monday, May 10,
2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the
Londesboro Hall,
