ANYONE INTERESTED IN PLAYING Brussels Men’s Town League Slow Pitch 19 and over Contact: Jeff 519-887-9790 or Mike 519-887-6449 League starts May 25th SportsPeeWee Lightning go lossless, win provincials The PeeWee Saugeen Maitland Lightning went as far as they could this year, bringing home gold at the provincial level, and local players Lexi Smith and Samantha (Sam) Pruden were excited to share the news. “It was a good season, we had no losses,” Smith said. “And we had provincials in April, where we won all six games.” The team didn’t fare so well in the previous year, according to veteran Pruden, who said all but six players and a few coaches returned for their very successful recent season. “We lost some games, and didn’t get quite as far as we did last year,” she said. Bringing home the provincial gold was a moment of perfection for the duo, each having their own way of explaining how great it made them feel. “It felt like life was complete, like it was as perfect as it could be,” Smith said. “It felt like what I think winning an Olympic medal would feel like,” Pruden said. According to Shelly Smith, Lexi’s mother, the team kept playing Oakville in the many tournaments the girls had, and some times the games went one way or another. The girls brought home gold medals from provincials, as well as a Scarborough tournament, the LLHFL PeeWee Champions, League Championships and the International Silver Stick, a bronze medal from the LLHFL PeeWee Championships and a silver medal from the Toronto Aeros tournament. The girls attribute the success of the team to the dedication that the players showed. With players from Owen Sound south through Mitchell, each player cared about hockey according to Smith. “Everyone really focused,” she said. “We all went everywhere together and when the going got tough, we all stuck together.” In the short off-season, Smith plays soccer and participates in track and field, and then she begins summer dry-land training in July for the next season. The girls said they could not have won without the tutelage of former coaches, and the dedication of their parents, getting them to and from games, as well as the sponsors that each player had to get, which makes the season possible.
