beef was enjoyed by nearly 60
diners and this week’s dinner will be
turkey.
The Saturday afternoon euchre

players hoping to be winners. The
first-place team was Lillian Appleby
and Delores Howatt with 75 points.
“Hurrah, Hurrah for the first of
May …” goes the spring ditty. May
is here in all her splendour.
The birds are busy scratching the
grass, checking the worms, finding
the thatch and splashing in the bird
bath, a very busy time for them.
Reminds me of people.
For anyone familiar with
Wingham a few years ago, Lloyd
Scott was one of the familiar faces
that gave the town a little character.
For the last several years Lloyd has
called Braemar home and gave us
that character. He was the keeper of
various types of information. He
was the general manager of mostly
useless information, but if you
wanted to know an odd bit, Lloyd
would often produce.
In his unique way of
communication, knowledge was
selectively shared. Growing up with
sisters, Lloyd’s knowledge of
flowers remained with him as he
appreciated each bouquet brought to
the home with a full nose smell. His
little corner of our world was green
with healthy plants that he lovingly
cared for from slips from others. His
brother Spence’s wife Nelva and a
sister in Manitoba appreciated
Lloyd’s uniqueness. Being of the
frail members of society Lloyd gave
us the chance to do justice and share
love. Lloyd died last Friday.
The Maitland Foundation had a
successful fundraising event last
month. For several years now
tradition has been kept with dinner
in Brussels, prepared by Beth Earl
and crew, a few games of chance,
wonderful silent auction items, lots
of visiting and laughs, more games
finished with the live auction.
Familiar faces that are often only
seen that evening all year, nice
natural decorations all in an
atmosphere of familiar territory
make doing good for an excellent
cause quite pleasant.
The Foundation keeps the
Maitland River high in its thoughts
as it funds programs of education to
help keep our water safe. Programs
are available all year at the
Wawanosh Centre and include
plants, animals, birds and water for
our educational entertainment. So
good work to all the Foundation
members and Maitland staff as you
do this important work on our
behalf. Keep an eye in The Citizen
for upcoming events at Wawanosh,
they’re always fun.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Getting it started
Rick McDonald was a very active member of the Brussels
Legion fish fry crew on Saturday at Londesborough
Community Hall. The crew came in to help with the fish fry,
which went to benefit the Clinton Salvation Army Fire Relief
Fund. The crew fed 350 people and eventually had to start
turning people away. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
