Several consulting firms were recommended to be hired by the committee, totalling in over $200,000 in professional fees. The first selection was made for the Take Action for Sustainable Huron. The firm recommended to be hired for the job was LURA Consulting for the price of $116,469, with the funds to be provided by Huron County and the Green Municipal Fund, which is financed by the federal government. The second selection was made for the Economic Development Opportunities Blueprint Strategy and the firm recommended for that job was TCI Management Consultants for the price of $88,350. Neither of the firms were based in Huron County, which left a bad taste in the mouths of several councillors. “If we don’t choose someone from Huron County, we’re not increasing their experience and if they don’t have any experience, they’re not likely to get any work,”councillor Bill Siemon saidregarding LURA. “I think we’reshooting ourselves in the foot.”Councillors John Bezaire andJohn Grace, in addition to wardenBert Dykstra, were also named to the Sustainable Huron Steering Committee, which led to further confusion among some councillors. Councillors thought they were voting on the addition of those specific councillors to the steering committee, when in fact, they were approving the selection of the consulting firm as well. The recommendation, however, was passed. When discussing the Economic Development Opportunities Blueprint Strategy, senior economic development officer Mike Pullen said he went with the firm that offered Huron County the most experience, which coincidentally, was the most expensive. “I believe you have to look at the team assembled and the years of experience and that’s how we got to a higher rate,” Pullen said. “We’re paying for the experience of the individuals.” Pullen said other firms that had applied were going to assign new staff to the project, which made him uneasy about hiring them. That recommendation was alsoapproved. In addition to therecommendation of the twoconsulting firms, the committeevoted to send Goderich’s townplanner on a heritage study trip to Cotswold, England. This was a decision that came under heavy fire from several councillors. Huron County director of planning Scott Tousaw said certain funds had been set aside for professional development, whichare normally used for annualconference in Ontario.Planner Denise Carnochanwould be paid for four days on herregular salary, while she was offthe clock for four days as well. Tousaw said Carnochan’s wages would be split between Huron County and Goderich, the latter of which also offered to pay for her out-of-pocket expenses. Councillor Bernie MacLellan, although he had to leave the meeting early, submitted questionsthat he wished to be asked, namelyif this trip would be of any benefitto Huron County, or if it would justbenefit Goderich.Tousaw said the costs to sendCarnochan on this trip would be the same for her to spend three days and nights at her annual conference in Ontario. The recommendation to approve the trip was passed in a recorded vote with 12 votes to send her and six votes to not send her. By Shawn LoughlinThe Citizen Sometime during the night of April 12-13, unknown suspect(s) smashed the glass of the entry doors into the Exeter Lions Youth Centre to get into the building. Once inside, a door was forced open into the Town & Country Support Services office. The suspect(s) stole a coffee can which contained cash donations for the program. Speeder found to be impaired On April 17, at approximately 5:30 p.m., an OPP officer was patrolling on Harriston Road in Huron County when he observed a van travelling at a high rate of speed. The officer stopped the vehicle as it pulled into a laneway. The driver exited his vehicle and as the officer approached, he noted a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s breath as well as many other indicators that the man was impaired. The driver was placed under arrest for Impaired Driving. The driver was taken to the Wingham Police Department where he met with a qualified intoxilizer technician to provide two samples of his breath. The results of his tests confirmed that the driver had a blood alcohol level that was well in excess of the legal limit. As a result of the investigation, Isaac Nedorf of Morris Turnberry has been charged with multiple offenses. Suspicious house fire On Monday, April 12 at approximately 9:45 p.m., Huron OPP officers were dispatched to a fire in an abandoned log home located at the corner of Hensall Road and Front Road. The home has been empty for many years. The owners advised officers that they have had problems in the past with trespassers who have used the location for partying. The Seaforth Fire Department attended to battle the flames and further investigation led to the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office being contacted due to the suspicious nature of the fire. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about this, or any other crime, is encouraged to call the Huron OPP at 1-800-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
