Dave Williams led the service atLondesborough United Church onSunday, April 16.It was an “after Easter” reminder
that Easter should be the central
celebration of the Christina year and
that every Sunday Christians gather
to remember Christ’s love and
sacrifice.
As Dave lit the Christ Candle he
reminded all gathered that morning
that the candle light signifies
Christ’s light taking away the
darkness and despair that sometimes
creeps into our lives.
Easter is rebirth and Dave talked
with the children about the signs of
spring and rebirth that they have
noticed in recent days – spring
flowers, birds returning, trees
budding and longer days of light. All
these things are blessings from God
and he reminded them that they, too,
are blessings from God. He
encouraged them to share their
happiness in God and to touch the
lives of others in good ways.
A song of David was the
responsive reading, Psalm 30. John
21: 1-19 is that apostle’s account of
Jesus appearing to the disciples at
the Sea of Tiberias and His testing of
Peter’s love for Him. Dave read a
paraphrase of those verses from
Peter’s perspective.
Following a night of poor fishing
Jesus helped the disciples once again
to get a good catch and are with
them on the shore. Peter had denied
Jesus three times on Good Friday
and during this visit He asked Peter
three times to declare his love for
Christ.
Dave noted that Christians can
relate closely to Peter, for like us he
was human; he made mistakes.
However Christ refused to give up
on Peter and Peter became the
foremost of the apostles of the early
Christian church. Peter, then, gives
Christians hope.
Peter’s life teaches that God uses
ordinary people to accomplish
extraordinary things. God had a use
for Peter and He has a use for us,
too. Peter’s mistakes did not bring
rejection. God will forgive us as
well. God’s love for us enables us to
love ourselves knowing we are a
forgiven people.
The congregation was favoured
that morning with an anthem by a
male quintet, Harry, Mark, Mel,
John and Gordon. Traci Radford
read a Minute for Missions that
explained how monies donated to
the Mission and Service Fund of the
United Church is helping to bring
cleaner air to China and a cleaner
world.
There will be a Sunday School
meeting beginning at 7 p.m. on
Thursday, April 22.
The movie night is for April is
Friday, April 23 at 7 p.m. The
feature movie,Mr. Magorium’s
Wonder Emporium, is about a toy
store where the toys come alive.
Everyone is welcome.
The youth groups are participating
in a 30-hour famine at the church
Saturday and Sunday. They will be
conducting the morning service on
April 25. Come out and show your
support for the youth. Remember, “It
takes a village to raise a child”.
Wednesday, April 21 is full moon
night. One of the earliest flowers of
the spring is the herb, pink moss or
wild ground phlox. Ergo this is
“Pink Moon”. Others have named it
“Sprouting Grass Moon”, “Egg
Moon” or “Fish Moon”, because
around this time the shad swim
upstream to spawn.
Linda Renkema has placed a box
at the post office for your old cell
phones, ink cartridges and digital
cameras. She is collecting them in
support of Huntington’s Disease.
Just one more way to recycle and
help out a good cause. “Earth Day”
is this Thursday and donating these
things will keep them out of
landfills.
Hullett Central Public School was
bursting at the seams on Friday
evening, April 16 as they hosted
their annual Carnival and Auction.
The hard work of parent volunteers
and members of the Student
Advisory Committee was apparent
in the number of activities that
everyone enjoyed that evening, some
old favourites and some fresh new
ones.
The children were able to play
games, have their faces painted, take
part in a penny sale and visit a
petting zoo with bunnies, chicks,
calves, goats and lambs. It was treat
night for families as Mom and Dad
didn’t have to cook and everyone
had a choice of food and snacks.
Many families enjoyed a wagon ride
offered by Hugo Bontrup of “Home
on the Range”.
Each child donated items for
classroom theme baskets and thanks
to the generosity of parents, 24
baskets were part of the silent
auction, everything from a beach
party to a barbecue night.
Burt Lobb conducted a live
auction for 10 items then everyone
could score their choice of item(s)
from the silent auction tables. The
list of table items was extensive and
listed in a booklet the front cover of
which I’m told was coloured by
pupils in the Kindergarten classes.
All proceeds from the event fund
special projects and purchase
equipment items to benefit all pupils
at the school. Early estimates
suggest approximately $13,000 was
raised. And as one young member of
my family stated, “Everyone had fun
meeting friends.”

Margaret Wright, Joan Goodall
and Brenda Konarski lead members
of the Londesborough UCW in
worship at the April 12 meeting held
in the Sunday School room. The
theme was new birth and new
beginnings that are the Easter
message. The supporting scripture
passage was Peter, chapter 1. Their
choice of hymns spoke of this Easter
resurrection.
Londesborough United had turned
out with Easter bonnets for the
Easter morning service and the
women shared readings about Easter
hats. Brenda Konarski chose a
reading from an Ideals magazine
from 1961. She told how special that
book with Easter lilies on the cover
was to her as she had received the
copy from her grandmother as a
child.
The rest of the evening was spent
finalizing plans for a number of
upcoming events.
