The Blyth-Brussels Atom Girlstravelled to Newmarket’s MagnaCentre for the Atom C provincialchampionships over the weekend. The first game was against theTemiskaming Shores Puckhoundson Friday morning. The girls found themselves down a goal less than two minutes into the game. Delayna Smith would answer back with a goal to tie the score a minute later. The Puckhounds took the lead again at the midway point of the second period. Once more Smith would answer back less than a minute later. There were numerous chances at both ends of the ice the rest of the game and Julia Beaven played extremely well in net to keep the game tied. With three minutes to go in the game, a penalty was called and the girls would be called upon to kill it off. In the last seconds of the penalty the Puckhounds had tremendous pressure and the puck was pulled off the line several times by Beaven and the weary defenders, but there was one too many bounces and finally it went across the line with two secondsleft on the penalty. The team could not get theequalizer and suffered an openingheartbreaking loss.Next up was a Friday afternoonmatch with the Belleville Bearcats, that was a must win in a three- game round-robin format tournament. Still feeling the effects of the morning loss, the girls found themselves down 3-0 early on three unassisted goals by the Belleville captain. The girls showed their determination and a never quit attitude. With a Bearcat in the penalty box and a face-off in the offensive zone, Sydney Wightman won the face-off and got the puck to the net where Sydney Michie slammed it home to get the team on the board. Early in the third period Samantha Kerr was able to set up Smith to pull the team to within one. The girls would apply the pressure and another power play opportunity came with three minutes on the clock. With a minute to go the Belleville Captain was able to get by the pinching defence and iced the game on theensuing breakaway. The final scorewas 4-2. The final round-robin game wasa chance to end the year on apositive note and the oppositionwas the Orangeville Tigers. The team got off to a much better start in this game. Morgan Howson broke into the Tigers end in the second minute of the game and delivered a perfect pass to the front of the net and Wightman made no mistake in getting it past the goaltender. The Tigers got on the board late in the second period. Less than a minute later, Howson got a loose puck again and this time set upSmith for a goal. The Tigers wouldagain tie the score early in the thirdperiod. It looked like the gamemight end in a tie, but with 1:18 leftSmith grabbed a loose puck firing ahard shot through three defenders that hit the inside of the post and went into the net. To put the game out of reach and with the Tiger goalie pulled, Wightman dug the puck out of the corner and passed it to Kerr. With the Orangeville defence guarding the front of the net, Kerr put the puck in the top of the net and put the finish on a 4-2 victory. It was a very good way to the end the season and the parents werevery proud of the effort over theweekend. The results were notwhat the team had expected, but thegames were close and exciting andthat is all that you can hope for atthis time of year. A special thank you goes out for a season of hard work to the coaching staff of Bruce Higgins, Mike Kerr and Alison Wightman. The other members of the team are Shelby Higgins, Brookelyn Johnston, Alexandra Martin, Sarah Mitchell, Sarah Strome, Jasmine Vader, Brittany Walden and Morgan Willie. Well-deserved A special presentation was made to J.R. Coultes, right, at April 13’s closing dinner for the Country Curlers league at the Wingham Curling Club. Coultes began curling at a young age and has been a member of the club for decades. The presentation was made by Stewart Leedham, president of the Country Curlers.(photo submitted) The weatherman was not quite as co-operative this past week at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. It was still great to see all the smiles of the golfers who came out to play their first rounds of the year. Everything is two to three weeks ahead of last year and the course is in mid-June condition which will hopefully lead to a great golf season. Linda Walker, the ladies’ captain, reports the Tuesday night ladies’ league kick off their season on May 11 with their traditional opening golf and meal. Bill Johnston is ready to roll with the Wednesday senior men’s morning and “Buff” Bill Kerr was spotted around town so the Thursday night men will be off and running soon. Cheryl opened up the kitchen Monday, April 19 and is keen to work on the new and healthy menu, but is quick to point out to the regulars that their burgers and fries will still be available. Bruce and Mark have been busy working on the course. Bruce reports there are 20 hole- sponsorship signs on our nine-hole course which is great to see and very encouraging for the future. New inventory is arriving in the pro shop and the girls will be able to provide their hubbies some shopping ideas on our Mother’s Day sales. Memberships and ticket track packages have been going well and are still available. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS The GAO handicap computer should hopefully be up and running in the near future. The system is down from a power surge and reports are it will be operational next week. Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn Healthcare is Changing. Learn How. Have Your Say.
