THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2010.Sports Lightning edge out Oakville for provincial gold The Saugeen Maitland Lightning PeeWee “A” celebrated its Gold Medal Provincial Championship April 10 in Mississauga by defeating the Oakville Hornets 1-0 in the final game. Tori Terpstra tallied the only goal in the final with assists going to Lexi Smith and Miranda Lantz. Rebecca Ropp recorded her third shut-out of the tournament with a highlight save when a Hornet player intercepted a pass at her own blueline and raced in on a breakaway only to be denied by the focused netminder. The Bolts earned their way to the quarterfinals with victories over Ancaster, North Halton and Guelph. In the 4-0 win over Ancaster goals were scored by Ashlee Lawrence, Avery Reeves, Terpstra and Lantz. Assists went to Holly Nelson, Hannah Herman, Carmen Underwood, Neve Van Pelt, Smith and Lantz. The 2-0 win over North Halton came from goals scored by Reagan Kaufman and Terpstra. Helpers went to Lantz and Reeves. Cassidy Becker earned the shut-out. In the 2-1 win over Guelph, Lantz and Smith each had a goal and an assist. The quarterfinal game required a goal by Lawrence at 4:07 of double overtime to defeat the Chatham Outlaws 2-1. Kaufman scored with under four minutes remaining in regulation time with assists going to Van Pelt and Ally Speilmacher. The parents all required a manicure after that game! In the semi-final game, Willowdale Red Wings became the Lightning’s next adversary and fell to the Bolts by a score of 3-0. Lantz, Van Pelt, and Terpstra bulged the twine with helpers going to Taylor MacDonald, Kaufman, Terpstra and Smith with two. Good job Jessica Sparling of Blyth has made the most of her freshman year at Cornell University. After walking on to the women’s crew team, the St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School graduate earned a seat in every race of the fall and spring seasons. Sparling has been selected as one of only 16 female rowers from colleges across the United States to attend the Women’s U.S. National Freshman Camp in June. The camp is for athletes with elite level potential and aspirations, but who have only one or two years of rowing experience. (Photo submitted) On Sunday, March 28, several members of Bak’s School of Martial Arts in Brussels attended and competed in the 25th annual Canadian Naha-te Goju Ryu Karate tournament in Elora. Many clubs from all around Ontario attended this celebratory event. Competition was held in three disciplines; open-hand forms of kata, forms with weapons or kobudo, and free form non-contact point sparring. Congratulations to the following local winners. Dylan Prout was second in the sparring discipline in the 7-9 year old Junior White/Yellow Belt division. In the 7-10 year old Yellow Belt division, Gregory Manley took first in the Kata discipline, and Seth McCauley took third in the sparring discipline. Johanna Blake took first in the kobudo discipline, and third in both the sparring and kata disciplines in the intermediate white/yellow/orange belt division. Jonathon Blake took second in the sparring discipline, and third in the kata discipline in the senior white/yellow/orange belt division, while Annie Prout took second in the kata discipline, second in the kobudo discipline, and third in the sparring discipline in the same division. Lastly, Gayle Prout took first in the sparring discipline, second in the kata discipline, and third in the kobudo discipline in the women’s white/yellow belt division.
