Lightning edge out Oakville for provincial gold
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
PeeWee “A” celebrated its Gold
Medal Provincial Championship
April 10 in Mississauga by
defeating the Oakville Hornets 1-0
in the final game.
Tori Terpstra tallied the only goal
in the final with assists going to
Lexi Smith and Miranda Lantz.
Rebecca Ropp recorded her third
shut-out of the tournament with a
highlight save when a Hornet
player intercepted a pass at her
own blueline and raced in on a
breakaway only to be denied by the
focused netminder.
The Bolts earned their way to the
quarterfinals with victories over
Ancaster, North Halton and
Guelph.
In the 4-0 win over Ancaster
goals were scored by Ashlee
Lawrence, Avery Reeves, Terpstra
and Lantz. Assists went to Holly
Nelson, Hannah Herman, Carmen
Underwood, Neve Van Pelt, Smith
and Lantz.
The 2-0 win over North Halton
came from goals scored by Reagan
Kaufman and Terpstra. Helpers
went to Lantz and Reeves. Cassidy
Becker earned the shut-out.
In the 2-1 win over Guelph,
Lantz and Smith each had a goal
and an assist.
The quarterfinal game required a
goal by Lawrence at 4:07 of double
overtime to defeat the Chatham
Outlaws 2-1. Kaufman scored with
under four minutes remaining in
regulation time with assists going
to Van Pelt and Ally Speilmacher.
The parents all required a manicure
after that game!
In the semi-final game,
Willowdale Red Wings became
the Lightning’s next adversary and
fell to the Bolts by a score of 3-0.
Lantz, Van Pelt, and Terpstra
bulged the twine with helpers
going to Taylor MacDonald,
Kaufman, Terpstra and Smith with
two.
Good job
Jessica Sparling of Blyth has made the most of her
freshman year at Cornell University. After walking on to the
women’s crew team, the St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary
School graduate earned a seat in every race of the fall and
spring seasons. Sparling has been selected as one of only
16 female rowers from colleges across the United States to
attend the Women’s U.S. National Freshman Camp in
June. The camp is for athletes with elite level potential and
aspirations, but who have only one or two years of rowing
experience. (Photo submitted)
