Are your income tax papers
gathered in; the days are fleeting fast
before you have to actually sit down
and see where the money went for
another year. It’s a good time to
review the last year, as those slips of
paper tell how life went. Very
enlightening actually.
We’re in the midst of Earth Week,
a time to stop and really look at the
world in our space. If it’s spoiled by
trash, put on your gloves and remove
it. A few littering jerks shouldn’t
keep the beauty hidden. Your action
will be appreciated by more
people than you realize. So see you
on the curbs and roadways this week
as we all do our part to clean our
space.
This week also think about your
water and electricity consumption
and ways to reduce it every day.
We have become a band of
consumers, hardly thinking about
the long-term effects. At the
very least, stop to see if this is a
need. If it’s only a want, then
think again. Our earth is fragile
and each action results in a reaction,
maybe now or maybe later
but a reaction will come. Be careful
with our good earth, we have only
one.
The Presbyterians are hoping
you’ll save your energy and eat with
them next Sunday. They’ll have thebanquet ready on April 25 for you tocome any time between 4:30 and 7p.m. So support the church, enjoy good conversation and great food and besides, no dishes todo. A win/win situation foreveryone.Sheila Richards has returned.Home sweet home was on her mind
as she recovered in Middlesex.
Convincing the family she was ready
for independence, she arrived home
and she enjoyed neighbours, friends
and church on her first weekend
home.
Kimball Union Academy is
pleased to announce that Brianne
Wheeler, class of 2010, daughter of
Gerald and Brenda Wheeler of
Brussels has achieved Academic
High Honours during the fall
trimester. Founded in 1813, Kimball
Union Academy is an independent
boarding and day school for students
in Grades 9-12 and post-graduate in
Meriden, New Hampshire.
We’ve had two encounters with
nature this week that gave that wow
feeling. A huge, very dark deer, not
the Santa kind, landed on the road as
we were slowing down for
Cranbrook, another leap and it was
off the pavement and gone. Yippee!
Then on Sunday a turkey decided
flight was in order as we returned
home on Highway 89. The body
mass of the bird was very
impressive. Both the deer and
the wild turkey had their
flight patterns in order and
skimmed past us just fine. After
the fact, we enjoyed the scenery
with only our breath a little
jagged.
Speaking of flight, the ash from
Iceland has had a far-reaching effect
on the world as over 65,000 flights
had to be cancelled for the safety of
the passengers and the planes. We’ve
all had our education on the
temperature of ash and the effects on
airplane motors over the past few
days. During Earth Week, it’s
another time to realize how our lives
can be so affected by the other side
of the globe. It really is a small,
small world.
So this week, be good to yourself
and the earth.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Nelva Scott opened the April 6
meeting of the Brussels United
Church Women with the UCW
purpose. Eight members were
present.
Isabelle Wheeler was in charge of
the worship, reading scripture from
Matthew 28. Isabelle continued with
the “The Story of the Easter Lily”
and another story about “The Easter
Story” performed by actors.
Nelva Scott thanked all who
helped with lunch for Holy Week
service.
Donations were made to the
Mission and Service Fund and the
Brussels Board of Stewards.
Plans are underway for a dinner in
May and will be finalized at a later
date. The UCW will prepare lunch
for the Mason’s Service, April 25 at
Brussels United.
A potluck supper will be held
May 5 with guests present. Sandra
Cable will tell about her trip to
China and show pictures.
Sandra told about a play at Forest
she wishes to attend in July and
anyone is welcome to go with her. It
is called The Promise.
Majestic Women’s Institute met
April 14 at the Brussels Library for
the annual meeting.
Twelve members and 10 guests
attended a potluck lunch.
Many thanks to the wonderful
group of ladies who volunteered
their time to hand quilt the queen-
size quilt for our annual raffle.
Guests from the 4-H updated
members on what was going on.
They are running a digital
photography club and a horticulture
club. Their work will be displayed at
the Brussels Fall Fair in September.
John Deere is running a barbecue
fundraiser event May 8 in Blyth for
the 4-H club. The clubs are growing
and need more leaders as kids were
turned away from clubs due to a lack
of supervision. Life-skills youth
leaders are needed and this can be
used for needed volunteer hours.
Cranbrook hall is also looking for
volunteers.
After lunch it was on with
business. The minutes were read.
Institute pins were presented to
Olivia McHardy and Bev Craddock.
Wanda Walker was to also receive
her pin but was regrettably absent.
With 16 members volunteering
2,227 hours over the past year it was
another successful year for the
institute.
A new executive was sworn in – a
new year begins. Thanks was
extended to outgoing president,
Yvonne Knight for all her work over
the past two years. Members look
forward to working with new
president Lucy Hesse for the next
two years. Two new members joined
the Institute, Sandy Allison and
Martha Fehr.
The Institute would welcome
anyone else interested in joining.
Meetings are held the second
Wednesday of the month at 1:30
p.m. in the Brussels Library.
The unfinished objects meeting
was held Monday, April 12 at
Joan James’ home with 12 in
attendance.
