Jim said that the community
will miss one of its true ambassadors
as his father did so much
for Brussels, which he loved so
much.
“He did so much for the
community and he was involved in
everything,” Jim said. “He loved
Brussels and he just loved life.”
Oldfield’s fellow business owners
agreed. Jack McCutcheon, owner of
McCutcheon Motors said that while
he wasn’t very familiar with
Oldfield, he knew that he was
important to Brussels.
“Max was a great asset to the
municipality,” McCutcheon said.
“No doubt about it. He was a total
businessman.”
In his later years, Oldfield
experienced five heart attacks and a
severe stroke.
As his father’s health deteriorated,
Jim says his dad would refuse to
acknowledge any poor health. When
asked how he was feeling, Jim said
his dad would always say he was
feeling fine.
During hospital visits and
subsequent hospital stays, Jim said
his father would refuse a wheelchair
because they were “for old people”
and despite being cold through the
night, he wouldn’t call for nurses,
because he insisted on not being a
bother to anyone.
“When my dad was in the
hospital, he would walk past the
nurses’ station and they would give
him hell for not having his cane, so
he would go back to his room, get
his cane and walk right past the
nurses’ station again with his cane
hanging from his arm,” Jim said.
“Then he’d look back and give the
nurses the funniest little grin.”
Oldfield remained independent as
long as he could, Jim said, refusing
to be admitted to a retirement home.
He was set to enter one on April 7,
six days after his death.
“He would do everything on his
own. He had his emergency button
and he would never press it, because
he didn’t want to be a bother,”
Jim said. “He said he didn’t want to
bother the nurses and he didn’t
want to bother the other patients
in the room while they were
sleeping. He was a very independent
man.”
Oldfield’s visitation service was
held at the Schimanski Family
Funeral Home on April 4 from 2
p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9
p.m. Later that night, a Masonic
service was held, shortly followed
by a Legion service.
His funeral service was held at
Brussels United Church on April 5 at
2 p.m. and was officiated by Sandra
Cable. Remembrances were given
by his daughter Anne, son-in-law
Cecil and friend Ernie Bruce with
interment at the Brussels Cemetery
shortly afterward.
Pallbearers were Stephen
Oldfield, Brian Oldfield, Adam
Rytwinski, Andrew Rytwinski, Nian
Rytwinski and Ernie Bruce.
Max was the beloved husband of
the late Jeanne (Madill) Oldfield and
will be missed by his dear friend
Audrey Chambers of Wroxeter, his
children, Anne Rytwinski and her
husband Cecil of Almonte and Jim
Oldfield and his wife Darlene of
Brussels.
Max was the dear brother of
Miriam Blue of Bath and Vivian
Thompson and husband Gerry of
Brampton. He was loved by his
grandchildren Stephen (Vanessa),
Brian (Kayla), Nina, Adam and
Andrew. He was predeceased by his
brother Jack.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donation to the Wingham
and District Hospital Foundation
would be appreciated by Max’s
family.
