From the Minister’s StudyPastor Kuperus, family depart for missionBy Pastor John KuperusBlyth Christian ReformedChurch
The Kuperus family came to
Blyth on June 1, 2002 with four
children. The Citizen’s Bonnie
Gropp took a picture of me and
three of our children by our garden.
The headline read something like
“Planting New Seeds.” Yes, we did
plant seeds in this community and
we put down roots. We had no idea
that we would be here for eight
years, and they were a good eight
years here.
Before our arrival in Blyth, we
had no idea where we were going to
go. We were living in Grand Rapids,
Michigan attending Calvin
Theological Seminary. There were a
number of churches seeking
seminarians and we had decided to
go to Renfrew, Ontario. Renfrew did
not follow up with us and so we
decided we were not supposed to go
there.
Blyth called the seminary and
really wanted an intern. I had a
phone interview with three of the
church leaders and decided to visit.
We agreed to a three-month
internship, then to another nine-
month internship and eventually Iwas called to be the pastor. I sharethis because God opened a door for
us to come here and now we are at
another crossroad.
Early this fall we are planning
(D.V. the Lord willing) to take a
class in Hawaii with Youth with a
Mission (YWAM) called
“Crossroads Discipleship Training.”
The class is 12 weeks with an eight-
week field assignment at another
location. YWAM describes this
training as “a wild pursuit of God
and His heart for the nations.”
A lot of questions may come to
the surface, so I will attempt to
answer a few. First, our departure is
on a good note from Blyth. Our
church community has been
wonderful and an incredible
blessing. The GEMS, Cadet,
Sunday School and Vacation Bible
School were a blessing for our
children as they learn about God.
Giving a seminarian an
opportunity to complete an
internship and extend a call to him is
an honour. Then becoming a pastor
is an incredible responsibility and a
high calling. I care deeply about our
community and have been
passionate about knowing God andmaking him known.Years ago Samuel made a
statement that I have followed: “As
for me, far be it from me that I
should sin against the Lord by
failing to pray for you. And teach
you the way that is good and right.”
(1 Samuel 12:23).
We are leaving on a good note
with our village too. This has been a
great place to live. We have great
neighbours and it has been
wonderful getting to know Jim and
Joan Chalmers, Murray and Donna
Hamm, Max and Brenda Brooks,
Ross Wilson and Carol Higgins to
name a few.
We are thankful for the Blyth Fire
Department, which was out to our
home on one occasion. We are very
thankful for Clinton and District
Christian School, where our
children’s education had Jesus
Christ at the centre and for the high
academic standards. We are thankful
for the Blyth Public School where
three of our children attended junior
kindergarten.
The community has blessed us
with the sports we have been able to
engage in, baseball, soccer and
some hockey. We are thankful for somuch and feel like we have beentremendously blessed by being here.
Three children have been added to
our family and we will be leaving
Blyth with seven children. We came
with a seven-seat van and then
moved up to an eight-seat van and
now have a 12-passenger bus/van.
We came on a visitor’s visa and are
leaving Canadian citizens.
Some things stand out in my mind
about Blyth. On our first trip to
Blyth, we had a spaghetti dinner
with Ralph and Veronica DeVries.
The DeVries family warmly
welcomed us and was very
supportive to us coming here.
Another person that stands out is
George Reinink, who gave me a tour
of Blyth with a four-wheel-drive
Jeep.
He gave me a great introduction to
Blyth. There are many others who
have made a lasting impression that
will remain unnamed.
As time has passed, the one thing
that has become clear is how
dependent we are on God.
I see our stay in Blyth as sent to us
by God. Now we are stepping out
again into the unknown and our eyes
are upon the Lord to provide for us.God speaks of our future and says,“For I know the plans I have for
you,” declares the Lord, “plans to
prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future,”
(Jeremiah 29:11).
I do not know what the future
holds, but I do know the one who
holds the future.
In closing, we would appreciate
your prayers that God may give us
open doors and that we would have
the boldness to walk through those
doors.

ABC Women’s Ministry presents
“FAITH IN SONG”
The sixth meeting of the
Wawanosh 4-H Holiday Honeys was
held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday,April 5
at the Jeffersons.
While members were arriving,
junior leader, Reba Jefferson, led the
club in their practice of songs for
their achievement program.
President Sophie Jefferson began the
meeting with the pledge, then led
roll call, which asked members what
their favourite Christmas tradition
was.
Many members answered with
decorating the tree, spending time
with family and opening presents.
Loretta Higgins then read the
minutes from the last meeting.
Mary Ellen Foran then began
sharing the Christmas information
and history from the book and
allowing most members a chance to
read.
The club learned about the origin
of the poinsettia which began in
Mexico with two poor, young
children picking weeds and placing
them at the manger at church.
The green leaves turned
suddenly to red and the
tradition of the poinsettia was
created.
Next, Marita Oudshoorn, Cathy
Drennan and Mary Ellen
demonstrated how to do the blanket
stitch to create felt teddy bears.
The members worked hard to
finish them and they are now ready
to be used as a tree ornament for
Christmas. Meagan Higgins then
shared her senior project which was
Cherry Swirl Fudge which the club
enjoyed.
Melissa Higgins talked about
her senior project, a Christmas
craft.
The members had made and
decorated three cupcakes for
Christmas, so members shared how
they decorated their cupcakes then
members choose their favourites to
eat.
Sophie closed the meeting with
the motto. The achievement program
is on May 1 at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest,
Lucknow. Members are to have
their books and all their crafts
completed.
