The village of Walton had its population decreased by two this past week when Don and Pat Nolan moved to their new home in St. Thomas. The Nolans had their home for sale off and on over the last couple of years, and we never really thought they would move. It happened in a hurry. They sold the house, bought a new one in St. Thomas and in just over a month, they have moved. Why St. Thomas? Don and Pat’s daughter Pam and her husband live there, with two small children, and gramma and grandpa can now be close. The Nolan name has been in the Walton area since the 1850s and it will be strange not to see one of the Nolans strolling the streets of the village. Don and Pat came to Walton in the late 60s after their marriage and started their family in 1970 with the birth of daughter Pam. Tim was born in 1972 and in 1974, twins blessed their lives, Mark and Michael. My first recollection of knowing anything about the Nolans was in 1975, when the village was in shock to hear Pat had fallen. Not just any old fall, but one when she fell and broke both of her wrists playing ball – a mother of four, with twins just around a year, can you imagine. Pat just smiles and laughs about it now, when I had a visit with them before they left, but I am sure back then, it wasn’t quite as funny. Don started his working life with Ryans, but in 1968 he started with Huron County Roads Department and worked with them until his retirement in 2003. Don enjoyed his leisure time for about a year and then knew that he needed something more to do. It was 2005, when he strolled up the street to see if Dauphin’s Feed and Supply might need a part-time man, and that started a five-year job for Don. Pat was a stay-at-home mom until 1987 and then it was time to do something extra. Pat started driving a bus for Dick Mark’s bus line and enjoyed that for a few years. Pat then went to work for Canadian Agra in Blyth and then moved to Wingham. When Dauphin’s Store opened, Pat became the early morning girl at the store, a smiling face for many, looking for that pick-me-up coffee. Pat was also an important part of the Wingham and Area Foodbank. The Nolans were family and community-oriented folks and shared their time with many area youngsters by coaching baseball teams all through their young children’s minor ball years. They held positions on the Walton Area Sports Club and served on the Walton Hall Board in its inception. The Nolans are a couple that will truly be missed from the little village of Walton and we wish them well in their new surroundings and new adventures to come. The Walton Hall board held a roast beef dinner at the Hall on Sunday evening. It was well attended with nearly 75 enjoying the meal. Helpers included Barb Durell, Judy Lee, Judy Emmrich, Jo-Ann McDonald and Betty McCallum. Our condolences are extended Ross Nichol on the loss of his wife Barb Nichol. The McDonald family is pleased to have Karen McDonald Calhoun and husband Charlie back in Ontario. Karen and Charlie have moved to Bayfield from Roaring Gap, North Carolina and arrived on the weekend. Members of the family arrived on Sunday morning to unload the moving van and the job was done in record time. Men did the lifting and the girls did the unpacking. I have never seen such organization. Every box labelled with a list attached concerning its contents and which room it would go to. Our family function attendance has now grown by two. Karen is the daughter of Leona McDonald. Welcome back to Canada, Karen! The wedding show committee met again this week and are pleased to have things going as well as they are. Almost all the dresses have been assigned a model and the entertainment has been confirmed. The light lunch is being looked after by the UCW and it sounds delightful. Hopefully it will be a beautiful day for the event.Celebrating birthdays this pastweek were Marie McGavin, BettyMcDonald, Bonnie Hastings,Heather Dunbar, Shannon Craig,Doug Mitchell, Cole Zwep,Katheryn Emmrich, Jennifer Williamson, Jack Ryan, Neil Williamson, Mitch Blake, Theresa Pryce and Donna Knight.
