Friday, March 26 the Saugeen
Maitland Lightning PeeWee “As”
captured the Lower Lakes Women
Hockey League’s Bronze Medal in
Oshawa.
The Bolts and their season-long
rivals the Oakville Hornets started the
day by needing overtime to decide the
outcome. These two teams have met
several times throughout the season in
just about every tournament that these
two teams played in, each taking turns
celebrating victory.
Oakville scored first leaving the
Lightning pressuring for the equalizer.
Attempting time and time again until
with the goalie out for the extra
attacker Miranda Lantz tallied to tie
the score with assists going to Ciara
Lark and Tori Terpstra.
After five minutes of overtime
nothing was decided. Only one goal
was scored during the shootout and
that goal gave Oakville the passage to
the gold medal game.
The Lightning then played the
Buffalo Bisons for Bronze.
Again the Bolts gave up the first
goal of the game early in the third
period. This time though the
Maitlanders were rewarded earlier and
more often in their comeback attempt.
Miranda Lantz, Nicole Zabel and
Ashlee Lawrence scored to give
Saugeen a 3-1 win for the Bronze.
Lexi Smith and Lantz also added two
assists each to round out the scoring.
Next up for the Maitlanders is the
Provincial Championship Tournament
on April 9, 10 and 11.
The season came to a conclusion
two weekends ago in Brussels for
the PeeWee Reps.
The third game of the OMHA
finals was up in Manvers. Brussels
came out strong, scoring two goals
in the first three minutes to take a 2-
0 lead. These were scored by Wyatt
Ducharme and Mitch Kellington.
Assisting them were Scott Dolmage,
Austin Johnston and Ducharme.
Manvers fought back to tie it up
by the end of the first period.
In the second period, Manvers
pulled ahead and scored twice
before Hayden Ten Pas scored the
third goal for Brussels.
Going in to the third period, it was
4-3 for Manvers. Despite numerous
shots from both sides, no one scored
in the third period. Brussels came
home, down two games to one.
Sunday, March 21, the stands
were full of fans ready to cheer.
Thanks to Rebecca Chalmers for
singing “O’ Canada”.
It was 10:45 before Colton
Hastings got one in and Brussels
took the lead. Dolmage and
Ducharme assisted. Manvers tied it
up and took the lead. The second
period ended 3-1 for Manvers.
In the third period, Kellington
netted one, assisted by Ducharme. It
was not enough as Manvers took the
5-2 win.
Brussels accepted the OMHA
finalist trophy and Manvers
accepted the championship trophy.
Brussels ended a terrific season
boasting a record of 25 wins, one tie
and only five losses.

Atom girls advance to provincials
The Blyth-Brussels Atom Girls
took top spot in the Huron-Perth
group of the OWHA provincial
playdowns to secure a berth in the
provincial championships. The team
played Milverton and Stratford in a
home-and-away round-robin
tournament.
The team opened with a 4-1 win
against Milverton and then played
Stratford in back-to-back games and
won by scores of 4-2 and 5-0.
Since, Stratford and Milverton had
split their games with each other,
which meant that the local girls had
already clinched top spot. With
regular goalie Julia Beaven watching
from the stands with an arm injury,
Samantha Kerr stepped up to fill in.
She allowed only two goals, but the
offence was unable to get going and
the team went on to lose the game 2-
0.
The overall record of three wins
and one loss was good for first place
ahead of Milverton with an even
record of two wins and two losses.
The Atom C portion of the OWHA
championship takes place in
Newmarket at the four-ice pad
Magna Centre on April 9-11. The
team is in a four-team pool and plays
three round-robin games.
Their opponents are the
Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds,
the Belleville Bearcats and the
Orangeville Tigers. The top two
teams in each pool advance to the
quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.
