Dog care is lacking A successful mission Huron Clean Wateraccepting landownerfinancial applications The Huron Clean Water Project has funded more than 950 landowner projects The Huron County Clean Water Project is accepting applications from Huron County landowners for financial assistance to complete on- the-ground projects to improve and protect surface water and groundwater in the county. The highly-successful project has funded more than 950 projects, according to Doug Hocking, of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA). Hocking, along with other stewardship staff at the MVCA and stewardship staff at the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA), provide advice on how projects can be completed in ways that are cost-effective, practical and provide a long-lasting solution. The county has committed another $250,000 to the program this year. “The County of Huron has demonstrated its commitment to protecting and improving water quality through the project,” said Kate Monk, ABCA Supervisor of Stewardship and Conservation Lands. Huron County residents can receive up to 50 per cent funding for projects approved by the review committee. Activities eligible for consideration include livestock barn eavestroughs, river and field erosion control, decommissioning unused manure storages, fencing cattle out of watercourses, planting trees, upgrading wells and decommissioning abandoned wells. Community groups can also apply for projects and events that lead to water protection. “The combined partnership of landowners, Huron County and other program partners has resulted in more than $3 million in water quality improvement work on the landscape,” Monk said. “It’s making a difference in our environment and in the lives of Huron County communities.” For information on the Huron Clean Water Project can help you protect and enhance water quality, contact Monk at 519-235-2610 or 1- 888-286-2610 or Hocking at 519- 335-3557. THE EDITOR, Thanks goes out to everyone who donated to the Mission to Haiti. We collected: 47 pairs of crutches, 13 - three-pronged walking canes, 11 canes, 12 walkers and a lot of other things that were then taken to Norwich to be packed for shipping. A group of 22 people are leaving on April 10-17. They will conduct five medical clinics and hope to build three homes and repair some other buildings. Seven of these people are from the Blyth area: Herman Thalen, Joanne Van Amersfoort, John and Jane Klasen, Mike Siertsema, Susan Wilts and Cheryl Wilts. If you like to see what they are doing visit: www.mthcanada.org. Gaye Datema, Blyth. THE EDITOR, I am really fed up with stupid dog owners. On Good Friday, April 2, I was sitting in my place trying to watch TV and all I could hear was a dog barking. People say they want to shoot the dog that is barking. I say don’t shoot the dog, shoot the stupid dog owner! Put the stupid dog owner on a leash and let them have a taste of their own medicine. If they aren’t willing to look after the dog, then why have one? Animals love us unconditionally. All they ask for or look forward to is a pat on the had and a bowl of food and fresh water.
