The Blyth Festival has launched a
new initiative to give avid readers
and theatre enthusiasts the
opportunity to enhance their
knowledge of the Festival’s
upcoming 2010 season plays. The
Blyth Festival Play Reading Club
allows interested individuals to
attend staged readings of this
season’s plays—three of them world
premieres—and participate in a
guided study before these works
appear on stage this summer.
Heather Ervin, community
collaborative intern, has been
hosting regular programming at the
Blyth Centre for the Arts since the
launch of the Winter Arts
Umbrella—an initiative designed to
reach into the community and
further develop its artistic interests
and needs. The Winter Arts
Umbrella was launched November
2009.
Ervin says the Play Reading Club
is an amazing opportunity, because it
allows the Blyth community to
celebrate the entire life cycle of a
play.
“They get to see and experience
how a play grows and transforms
from words on a page into the
wonderful productions they see each
summer,” she says. “The Play
Reading Club allows participants to
take ownership of the plays and truly
develop a relationship with the
stories that will continue to develop
and grow throughout the season.”
The Club hosted its first event on
Saturday, February 27, 2010, with a
community reading of Kelly Rebar’s
Bordertown Café. The staged
reading was held in the Bainton
Gallery at the Blyth Centre for the
Arts, followed by a question and
answer period moderated by Blyth
Festival Artistic Director, Eric
Coates. Bordertown Café premiered
at the Blyth Festival in June 1987.
The Blyth Festival will host the
next Play Reading Club event on
Saturday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m.
with a reading and guided study of A
Killing Snow, by Paul Cuifo.

Accessibility upgrades at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre have been
completed and those involved were
recognized last week.
All the washrooms in the
auditorium, arena lobby and upper
viewing areas were recently
renovated with new fixtures and
flooring. Fully-accessible
washrooms and fixtures were
installed, including automatic door
openers, which were also installed
on the entrance doors to the
auditorium, arena lobby and viewing
area.
The improvements have made the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre “easily and
independently accessible,” as
opposed to being just “legally
accessible”.
“I am very pleased to join the
Municipality of Huron East for the
ribbon-cutting ceremony of the
fully-accessible Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre,” said
Carol Mitchell, Huron-Bruce MPP.
“With help from the Ontario Trillium
Foundation and many other
generous contributions, this local
community centre can now be
used by people of all ages and
abilities.”
In addition to the $28,400 that was
received from the Ontario Trillium
Foundation, over $40,000 was
donated by several service clubs that
were also recognized last week.
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
Catering Group, Brussels Lions
Club, Brussels Optimist Club,
Brussels Community Trust, Brussels
Figure Skating Club, Brussels Men’s
Town League Hockey and
Brussels Morning Star Rebekah
Lodge all donated towards
the project in addition to individual
contributions from Huron
East mayor Joe Seili and his wife
Debbie and George and Pat
Langlois.
The balance of the project, after
the aforementioned donations, was
covered by the Municipality of
Huron East and the Township of
Morris-Turnberry, along with
fundraising from the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Recreation
Committee.
