The Brussels Firefighters’
Association were recipients of
$7,500, at a presentation and
gathering last week, for the
department’s new thermal imaging
camera. The gift was made by the
Royal Canadian Legion Branches
and Ladies’ Auxiliaries Charitable
Foundation.
The application for funding was
made last April when firefighter and
Legion president John Lowe
suggested and proceeded with the
venture. The process involved
following a terms of reference and
then waiting and allowing the
process to flow.
With the price tag of the camera
just over $13,000, other fundraisers
such as the annual Father’s Day
breakfast and draw, helped to cover
the remaining cost. This is a first
time award for the association and
plans are underway for this year’s
application to the Foundation.
The Ontario Command Branches
and Ladies’ Auxiliaries Charitable
Foundation, a registered charity, is a
partnership of the branches of the
Royal Canadian Legion and their
Auxiliaries in Ontario Command.
Local branches and auxiliaries,
through poppy tagging and other
activities and fundraising means, all
help fund the foundation. Through
this collective strength, the
Foundation is able to fund projects,
which are normally beyond the
means of individual branches.
The foundation funds are used for
the following: Operation of the
Ontario Command Service Bureau,
veterans welfare, programs for aging
veterans, medical research, medical
equipment, bursaries, provincial
disasters and other purposes of a
charitable or benevolent nature.
Hospitals, clinics, fire
departments, and other not-for-profit
organizations involved in health care
may make applications for funding
to the foundation. Awards for
District ‘C’totalled $73,584 in 2009.
