Brussels Majestic Women’s
Institute held the meet March 17 at
the Mennonite Church. Twelve
members and 14 guests attended.
The Walton Women’s Institute was
invited as special guests.
The guest speaker was Kathryn
Alton B.Sc. OD. who works out of
the Wingham and Palmerston
Optometry Clinic. She spoke on eye
health topics included cataracts,
glaucoma and macular degeneration.
Cataracts can be repaired through
surgery. It is much simpler now and
takes about 15 minutes. The clouded
crystal is removed from the eye and
a replacement lens is implanted.
Glaucoma is a progressive
condition caused by damage to the
optic nerve. It can be controlled if
detected early.
Regular eye checkups can detect
these conditions as well as the need
for glasses. All children should have
their eyes tested before attending
school.
After, a surprise auction was held
and a great lunch was served.
Special thanks to the Mennonite
church for the use of their space.
The Institute met again on
Tuesday, March 23 at Lucy Hesse’s
store to arrange the program
schedule for the coming year. It was
also decided to hold a soup and
sandwich card party April 29 at noon
in the Brussels library.
A quilt has been completed by
Institute members and volunteers. It
was also decided to invite 4-H leader
and volunteer quilters to the annual
meeting in April to show
appreciation for their hard work.
