On behalf of the FE Madill Girls Hockey coaching
staff, we would like to take this time to thank a
number of people. This championship would not
have run as smoothly without the help of the many
OFSAA Championship Committee members,
volunteers who acted as our arena facilitators, hosts
and student helpers. The Municipality of North-
Huron and the Municipality of Huron-Kinloss
provided all participants with spectacular clean
arena facilities and great ice. We would like to thank
all the local media for their updated coverage of the
championship events before and throughout the
course of the championship. The support of the
entire staff and students of FE Madill was greatly
appreciated. It was fantastic to see the all the
community support that was shown not only to our
athletes but the athletes of the competing teams.
The parents of the athletes were an integral part of
this event, your support and encouragement was top
shelf. For your commitment and sacrifice, a special
thank you to the athletes’ families, and our families.

Novice LL struggle at tournament, advance in division
After a a slow start to the round-
robin playoffs the Blyth Bulldogs
Novice Local League team really
started to play well and advanced to
the next round.
The team opened with a tough
overtime loss to the Milverton
Drives after surrendering the lead
with 15 seconds to go in the third
period. That was followed by a win
against Brussels and a loss to
Walkerton.
There were five round-robin
games remaining and nothing short
of five victories would be required
to finish in first place. Well, the team
delivered and they did so in
convincing fashion. The team
earned three shutout victories in the
five games and outscored the
opposition by a 25-4 margin.
That left the team tied with
Milverton with six wins and two
losses for both teams. The tiebreaker
went to Blyth’s favour due to the
number of periods won during
round-robin play.
Next up is another round-robin
with Ripley and another Walkerton
team for the White Division
Championship.
Over the weekend, the Novice LL
team had a rough time at the Top Hat
Tournament in Mount Forest.
With three matches, the team
couldn’t net a win, falling 6-1
against Mount Brydges, 7-1 to
Walkerton, and fell to TDCMHA
(Chatsowrth, Desboro and Keady
Minor Hockey Association).
In their first match against Mount
Brydges, Blyth kept pace for the
first period, tying 1-1 thanks to Tyler
Drennan’s goal, assisted by Griffin
MacDonald and Connor Brooks.
Unfortunately, Blyth couldn’t
maintain the pace, being shut out in
the second and third periods.
Their second game of the
tournament followed a similar path,
with Blyth jumping out to an early
lead in the first, but being unable to
maintain that lead through the later
periods.
Blyth’s one marker in the 7-1 loss
was scored by Jason Wilts, assisted
by MacDonald.
In their third, and closest match,
Blyth fell behind early, and was only
ever able to catch TDCMHA, never
overcome them.
Blyth entered the second period
down by two, and were able to pace
TDCMHA for the remaining two
periods, but that original deficit
would prove too much to overcome.
Goals were scored by Wilts (2),
Ethan Scrimgeour, and Brooks, with
assists going to Scrimgeour and
Myea Fleet.
PeeWee girls win YCW
consolation final
The Blyth-Brussels PeeWee girls
played in the 61st Annual Goderich
Lions Young Canada Week
tournament over the March break.
Game one was against TCDMHA
(Chatsworth) Rebels and the team
came out slow and lost by a score of
4-2.
Game two was the next morning
against the host Sailorettes from
Goderich. Lindsay Shiell played
very well in net and held the team in
the game until the scoring came to
life in the third period. Emma
Strome and Delayna Smith scored
the goals enroute to a 2-0 victory.
Game three was against
Normanby. Again the team started
out very slowly and Shiell held them
in the game until the scoring kicked
in. Smith scored at the halfway mark
of the final period and Mackenzie
Nesbitt scored into the empty net to
secure the 2-0 victory.
The 2-1 record put the team in first
place in their pool and set up semi-
final match with the Peninsula
Northstars. The Northstars opened
the scoring in the first period. The
second and third period saw several
chances for the girls to get the
equalizer and with four minutes to
go Ashley Higgins finally got one
past the goalie. Regulation time
ended in a 1-1 tie. There would be
five-minute overtime played four
skaters aside. That format seemed to
throw the girls off and they lost the
opening face-off and really never
had control of the puck and after
only 40 seconds the winning goal
was scored by the Northstars.
That put the team in the
Consolation Final against a familiar
opponent the Mount Forest Rams.
The girls again got off to a very slow
start and spotted the Rams a 2-0
lead, but that would end their
scoring as the Blyth girls stepped up
their game.
Smith scored in the last minute of
the second period and again in the
opening minutes of the third to knot
the score at two. Higgins and Nesbitt
would add a goal apiece to seal the
victory by a final score of 4-2.
On their way
The F.E. Madill Girls Mustangs were well on their way last week as they won the OFSAA
tournament, which was held in local arenas, such as Blyth, Lucknow and for this
championship game, Wingham. The Mustangs won by a score of 2-0, clinching the
championship. (Aislinn Bremner photo)
Atoms knocked out
After climbing the ranks of the WOAA playoffs, Blyth’s Atom
Rep team was knocked out of contention on the weekend.
