By Jo-Ann McDonald
There have been many events on
President John Lowe’s agenda this
past week for the Legion.
Comrade John attended the Zone
Convention held in Mitchell on
Saturday and Sunday. He attended in
both his position as Zone Youth
Chairman and Branch President.
Monday evening was the annual
Brussels Fire Department’s service
club appreciation evening at the
BMG. President John, joined
District C Commander, Derek
Moore of Mount Forest in
presenting the Brussels Firefighters
Association with a cheque for
$7,500 from the Royal Canadian
Legion Charitable Foundation. The
money is going towards the $13,000
thermal imaging camera for the
Brussels station.
The third event for John in his
capacity as Zone Youth Chairman,
was to attend the District Public
Speaking event held in Lucknow.
The speaker from our Zone, Mark
Glipo from Kincardine, won the
Junior division and will advance to
Area Division speaking.
Thursday night darts had 16
darters taking aim at the boards. The
first-place team was Gord Jacklin
and Sandra Josling. The second-
place team was John Harrison and
Deb Cann. The high shot of the night
was by Deb with 111 and high starts
went to Roger McHardy 94 and
Norm Dobson with 98. There were
only a couple of weeks left in the
dart season and the final night is
April 8.
The Brussels Agromart held its
yearly customer pancake and
sausage information day at the
Branch. They had clients in and out
for most of the day.
The Friday night supper of cold
plate was enjoyed by a smaller
crowd. The ham, roast beef and five
different salads satisfied everyone’s
appetite. There will be no supper this
Friday, Good Friday, as the Branch
will not be open.
The Branch was busy, busy, busy
on Saturday with the Branch hosting
District double and team darts.
There were over 120 folks on hand
for the day. District Sports Officer,
Stan Howie opened the day with the
usual Legion opening. Branch
Sports officer Rick McDonald
welcomed the players and wished
them all good luck for the day.
The double event was held first
with Brussels having two double
teams competing. Ken and Linda
Bird and Deb Cann and John
Harrison played well but did not
make the finals.
The team event also had two
Brussels teams competing. Team
one was John, Deb, Ken and Linda
and team two was Cam Ross, Sandra
Josling, Ron Schmidt and Catrina
Josling. The teams had a good day
but neither team made the finals.
The Branch Comrades helping for
the day included Andy Overholt,
Lloyd Glanville, Greg Wilson, Rick
McDonald, Mabel Glanville, Jo-Ann
McDonald, Sandra and Catrina
Josling and all did a great job.
Branch members will have
received their newsletters and forms
for the silent auction. Please return
them as soon as possible with their
donations or intentions of donations,
so the paper work can be worked
on.
The month of April is busy as well
with the ever-popular fish frys
starting. Please reserve at least one
Saturday to help out at an event.
Did you put your lights out on
Saturday night to acknowledge
Earth Hour with all the
implications? It was a time for a
little thinking about how much we
rely on electricity; time to think
about the changes in our lifestyle;
time to think about the level of
luxury we feel is our right or perhaps
time for a little old-fashion fun in thedark. Hope your lights were out.The rain was a welcome thing onthe weekend. The lack of snow overthe winter made our earth very dryso it was good to feel the weeraindrops and as well it gave thegrass and flowers a welcome wash. The quilters in our communityvisited Teeswater last week to share
news, views and talents with other
quilters. They meet monthly as the
5-Star Quilt Guild to make comfort
quilts as well as share patterns, trips,
and talent. They regularly give away
their treasured quilts, this month to
11 people who have faced tragedy in
their lives.
The six ladies from Brussels are
part of this larger group from
Wroxeter, Lucknow, Ripley,
Wingham, Hanover and Chepstowas well as the area around. Thequilters enjoy each others’ companyas well as serve as a beacon of hopethat someone cares about others’distress. Good work ladies. We’re into Holy Week. Serviceswere held each day at noon at theUnited Church under the guidanceof the ministerial of the community.
It’s good to hear how the different
denominations view this week and
how it’s related to our lives now.
Of course the concern is how the
six churches in the village as well as
the others in our hamlets have lost
relevance. Less than a quarter of the
population, attends on a regular
basis. At the same time people
answer questionnaires that they
belong to a specific faith group. So
the searching by both groupscontinues. What are we offering togrow faith and what are we lookingfor to reassure us of faith? It’s anage-old question that continuallyseeks an answer. Ah the reason forLent.Easter is just around the corner. Ihope the Easter bunny has her eggsall in a row and ready for the happy
day.
Mothers all over, are checking the
cupboards and getting the food in
line for the children will be coming
home for Easter. It’s good we have
specific holidays, at least we know
to pause and all get together to
celebrate new life and spring
growth.
Happy Easter to you.
