The Citizen, 2010-03-25, Page 23THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2010. PAGE 23. The Blyth Festival will host a night of celebration and cabaret- style entertainment this spring. Homegrown will celebrate the Blyth Festival, its history, and the people who have kept it vibrant for 36 years. Homegrown will take place on Saturday, April 24, at 8 p.m. A reception will follow the performance in the Lower Hall of the Blyth Centre for the Arts. This special one-night-only performance will combine music, theatre, and stories in a cabaret style to delight the audience with reflections on 36 years of the arts in Blyth. The event is suitable for the whole family. Tickets are $25, available at www.blythfestival.com or by calling 1-877-862-5984. Artistic Director Eric Coates will host the evening, which features excerpts from several favourite Blyth Festival productions. “For 36 years the Blyth Festival has brought local stories to life on stage,” Coates said. “The artists who have worked here during these years always comment on the unique connection between the Festival and its local audience. Homegrown is a salute to the people who had the courage and the imagination to make the Blyth Festival what it is today: one of Canada’s leading creators of original, professional theatre.” The line-up includes an excerpt from He Won’t Come in from the Barn, starring Festival favorites Ted Johns and Janet Amos. Other Festival artists performing include Gil Garratt, whose hidden musical talents will be on display, along with Michelle Fisk, another familiar face who rarely has the opportunity to show off her singing voice in Blyth. Randy Hughson, Blyth’s own answer to Stompin’ Tom, will also make a special musical appearance. Long known for its strong connection to the community, the Blyth Festival is a haven for performers from the locale. Homegrown will also feature songs from members of the Blyth Festival Singers and local step dancers and cloggers will take the stage as well. Homegrown is a prelude to the Blyth Festival’s 2010 summer season, which runs June 23 - September 4.
