The Citizen, 2010-03-25, Page 22PAGE 22. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2010. Ball’s Bridge has been awarded a blue and gold heritage plaque for cultural significance as a result of an essay written by Huron County director of cultural services Beth Ross. The plaque, which should be installed at the bridge in 2011, has been officially approved by the Ontario Heritage Trust and will hopefully attract tourism to the area, Ross says. “This plaque is a pretty important thing to have,” Ross said. “I could see that it would help attract attention outside of Huron County and really put us on the map.” Ross says that the plaque places Ball’s Bridge in an elite group in Ontario and she could see tourism increasing because of this achievement. “This plaque really highlights the importance of the bridge, socially and in terms of its heritage,” Ross said. “There are people who travel and ‘collect’ these plaques.” Ross announced the achievement last week at Huron County council’s committee-of-the-whole meeting on March 17. Ross says the bridge has had several strokes of luck over the years, including a replacement bridge being built in a different location, which is rare, saving the bridge. In addition, she said, because of the bridge’s size, it was saved from winter maintenance vehicles, which would have salted the bridge and worn it down. “The trucks couldn’t get onto the bridge, so it was preserved quite nicely,” she said. “It was never salted because it was too narrow and it didn’t rust out.” Ross estimates that the plaque will likely be installed and unveiled sometime in 2011.
