Me to We is a new model of
thinking which helps people change
the world through their daily
choices. The Me to We concept is
about embracing our shared
humanity and thinking globally. It
works to support the Free The
Children project.
Free The Children is the world’s
largest network of children helping
children through education. There
are more than 1 million young
people participating in the program
throughout 45 different countries.
Over the years, Free The Children
has helped to build over 500 schools
and presents a greater opportunity
for our local community to engage
in global relief efforts.

By Rev. Gary ClarkBlyth United ChurchThis past week I got onto anairplane from Calgary with a sore
back. The reason for this was that I
had spent nearly a solid week
carrying my first grandchild around
his parent’s house.
If I was good I got to take him
outside for long walks and I carried
him in one of those baby carriers
things that you strap on your back
but have the baby facing you. In
those long walks I got to tell him
about my hopes and dreams for him.
I held him for hours. Ok, I’m a baby
hog. I confess that I love holding
those little bundles of joy. Yet there
was something special about this
bundle, a grandchild, the third
generation. It got me thinking about
the future in a whole new way and it
made me realize why my parents had
spoiled my children every chance
they got.
First let me talk about the future.
The scriptures warn us that when
parents eat sour grapes it is the
children who get the sour taste.
(paraphrased from Ezekiel 18:2)Which basically means when we asparents mess up, our children are theones who really pay for those
mistakes. It is no wonder that many
Native Americans believe that when
a tribe or family make a big decision
that they should consider its effect
on each generation up to the seventh
generation. Now I know that most of
us have a hard enough time
balancing our cheque books let alone
considering how our actions today
will affect our children or
grandchildren but that doesn’t mean
we shouldn’t try to consider them.
As a matter of fact maybe if we
accept that our actions in our time
‘will’ affect the future in which our
grandchildren live we just might be
motivated to make the effort. What
will be the lasting effect of the
chemicals that we routinely spray
on everything from grass to
apples? What will be the lasting
results from polluting our water,
soil and air? What will be the
legacy left behind if we cannot
speak with love and respect to
people of different religious orcultural backgrounds? Thesequestions matter, but more than thathow we live the answers will play a
large role in the lives of our
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
When my parents would visit the
grandkids they often came loaded
with goodies. Toys and candy in a
greater supply then I ever expected,
as a child, would magically appear.
Christmas came with every visit. I
understood this; they had reached an
age when they had more money in
the bank account to spend on such
things. They also didn’t have to deal
with the fallout from sugar
overloads. They wanted to show the
grandkids how much they loved
them but knew that they would not
have the ability to be with them
everyday like they had been as
parents. They were shooting for the
memorable, the exciting, the joyous
few days instead of the long
everyday haul. I get it. As I held my
grandchild and found myself in
those grandparent shoes I felt the
same way. How can I get this child toknow me or remember me when myvisits will be so far apart? How can Ishow him that I am thinking about
him and care about him even when I
am not there? The answer hit me like
a ton of bricks. I wouldn’t always be
here. Some generation of mine will
have to face life without me by their
side. It will not matter then if they
have toys or candy but it will matter
a great deal if they have poor air
quality or an economy in shambles
or warfare between political or
cultural factions. By helping make a
better world and a better Blyth today
I can make a real difference in their
tomorrow. Yes that means I have to
make the effort to consider my
actions. Yes that might mean
sacrifices in my comfort. And yes it
comes at a cost of time and money
but if I really want to spoil my
grandkids then I pray for the wisdom
to give them more than toys and
candy. Let me give them that
consideration in my present actions
so that their future will be all that I
would want for them. One more thing, I like the nameGrandpa Gary. It reminds me ofwhat life is for and why we are here.
Peace, Gary
