Addiction Services in Huron
County will be looking for a new
host agency for next year. The Huron
County Board of Health, which is
currently responsible for the service,
says an agency with a focus and
expertise in that area would be a
better match.
Huron Addiction Services
provides free, confidential
counselling to anyone concerned
about an alcohol, drug or gambling
addiction.
Local Health Integration Networks
(LHINs) are responsible for the
accountability arrangements and
funding of community addiction
services across the province. The
SouthWest LHIN currently has an
agreement with the Huron County
Health Unit to provide addiction
services.
Medical Officer of Health, Dr.
Nancy Cameron, says the health unit
has been working with the LHIN
over the past year to explore a better
option. “Addiction services are not a
public health program and Huron
County deserves a host agency that
can commit the resources to better
meet the needs of residents. While
our addictions counsellors are
excellent professionals, they have
not had the resources needed to
further develop services. ”
Dr. Cameron says there will be no
changes to Huron Addiction Services
until January 2011. “During this time
of transition the health unit will work
closely with the LHIN and the new
host agency to ensure a seamless
transition. We are also committed to
the staff to ensure they have the
necessary supports and assistance
they need with the change.”
The Board of Health passed a
motion in early March to notify the
LHIN that the service will be
discontinued on December 31, 2010
and the health unit will work with the
LHIN to transition the service to a
new agency.
