BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, March 21 were Myrtle
and Larry Badley. Ushering were
Elaine Chamney, Terry Richmond,
Lavern Clark and Harvey Bernard.
Music director was Floyd Herman
and Fred Hakkers ran the Power
Point.
Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church on this Fifth
Sunday of Lent. Rev. Clark drew
everyone’s attention to the
announcements in the bulletin. Rev.
Clark reminded everyone that the
Sunday School was in charge of the
service on Palm Sunday and that the
service would be held downstairs
next Sunday.
The UCW executive members
were inducted to their new offices:
President, Mildred McAdam;
secretary, Shirley Giilck; treasurer,
Joann Macdonald; correspondence
secretary, Lenora Davidson; funeral
catering convenor, Irma Mason and
catering convenors, Sharon Bromley
and Myrtle Badley.
The call to worship, “Come All Ye
People” was sung. The children
were asked to come to the front for
their story time. Reid Button lit the
candles at the front for the church.
Rev. Clark asked the children to
think of the best present or gift they
had ever received. One answer was
fish, another was a hockey net and
one answer was they were all pretty
good. Rev. Clark explained to the
children that when you receive a gift
it means someone loves you. The
children went downstairs for their
time of fellowship.
The next hymn, “Forty Days and
Forty Nights” was sung. The
scripture lesson was from Luke 7:
36-50 read by Lori Brooks. The
choir anthem was, “A Lenten
Lesson.”Rev. Clark’s message to the adultswas “Heartache and Healing.” Thescriptures tell us of the womancoming to the Pharisee’s home, washed Jesus’ feet with her tears, dried His feet with her hair andanointed His feet with ointment shehad brought with her. The Pharisee
was upset with Jesus because He
allowed the woman of sin to wash
his feet. Jesus tells the Pharisee of
the story of the two men who had
been given 500 pence and 50 pence
by a creditor and they have been
forgiven by the creditor. Jesus asked
the Pharisee which one would love
him more. The Pharisee said the one
with the most debt. Jesus turned to
the woman and forgave all her sins.
Gratitude is a gift. Sometime we
make good choices and sometimes
we make bad choices. All our gifts
are from God and we should be
thankful.
The next hymn, “Come, Let Us to
the God of Love” was followed by
the receiving of the offering, the
prayers for the world, the singing of
The Lord’s Prayer, the last hymn,
Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross,” the
Commissioning and Benediction
and the singing of the “Three-Fold
Amen”. Everyone was asked to join
the Sunday School for Birthday
Sunday to celebrate all the birthdays
in March with coffee, juice and
cupcakes.
Our birthdays!
(J.R. Miller, “The Beauty of Every Day” 1910)
Some people come to birthdays regretfully. They do not like to think that they are
growing older. But there is no reason for regret, if only we are living our years as
we should live them, as we may live them.
Empty years — are a dishonor. Years filled with sin — are blots in the calendar. We
should be ashamed to come to a birthday at the close of a year of idleness, indolence,
neglect, or unfaithfulness. Jesus said we must give account for every idle word we
speak. It will be an unhappy reckoning that we must make, after an idle year, or for
idle hours and days in a year.
But there need never be a shadow of regret in coming to a birthday, when we have
lived our best through all the days. If we go through a year walking with God — we
shall come to its close with enlarged life, with nobler character, with richer virtues
— in every way a more godly man or woman.
Growth is a law of life. When growth ceases, death is beginning. God counts our age,
not by our birthdays — but by the advances which His eye sees in our inner life.
Growth, too, is not marked by height or weight or by accumulations of money or
property or earthly honour — but by an increase in godly character.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
