The National Farmers Union in
Ontario will hold its annual regional
convention on Saturday, March 20
in Stratford, Ontario. The meeting
will be held at the Army Navy and
Air Force Veterans Banquet
Hall, 151 Lorne Avenue East in
Stratford.
Among the highlights of the
meeting will be two panel
discussions. The first is on the
financial crisis confronting pork
producers, and will feature John
Nyenhuis and Rein Minnema. The
second panel discussion will focus
on alternative energy and the effects
of facilities such as wind power
turbines on neighbouring farms and
rural communities.
Policy resolutions will be debated,
and elections will take place for a
new Ontario Regional Council.
Current NFU Ontario Co-ordinator
Grant Robertson, who farms near
Paisley in Bruce County, has
announced he will not seek re-
election.
“I am grateful for the support that
NFU members have shown me over
the last three and a half years,” he
said. “One of the things I am most
proud of is how the NFU has
continued to grow in Ontario. That
growth is due to all the hard-
working people at all levels of the
NFU. I want to thank them and say
that it has been an honour to work
with them all.”
Robertson said he has truly
enjoyed his time as NFU Co-
ordinator, despite the long hours and
the state of the farm economy.
“Talking to farmers from one end
of the province to the other has
convinced me that we can have a
better future if we remain strong and
united, and work together for a
common goal,” he said. “This year’s
convention will be important
because we’ll be charting a new
course, with new leadership capable
of taking on the challenges we all
face.”
On Sunday, March 21, a morning
NFU Board meeting will be held at
9 a.m. at the Parlour Restaurant, 101
Wellington Street, in Stratford. The
meeting is open and the Board of
Directors invites all NFU members
to attend.
