THE EDITOR,
This letter is an appeal for
assistance from our local
communities. Mike Alton, 31 years
old, has been diagnosed with a rare
form of cancer, and is currently
undergoing chemo and radiation
treatments in London. Mike and his
partner, Jenny Tucker and their two
young sons (Brett, six and Jakob,
two) have been long-term residents
of the Dungannon community.
Until this past Christmas Mike
was a valued employee for 14 years
at Alton Century Farms, Belfast.
Mike has had to leave his job to
focus on his healthcare. A group of
Dungannon volunteers is hosting a
fundraising benefit to assist with
Mike and Jenny’s everyday living
expenses (mortgage payments,
hydro, telephone, medical trips to
London, etc.). The benefit will be
held on Sunday, April 25 from 11
a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Dungannon
Agricultural Hall and will be a silent
and live auction with lunch
available. Any and all donations
(new articles or monetary) would be
gratefully accepted, and can be
dropped off at the West Wawanosh
Insurance office in Dungannon,
Goderich Service Centre, 79 Victoria
St. N., Goderich, or picked up by a
volunteer by calling Duane and
Nancy at 519-529-3130 or
Virginia and Dave at 519-529-7733.
Thank you for taking the time to
consider this young family in need.
Virginia Caesar, Dungannon.
THE EDITOR,We are eternally grateful for theactions of Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) Constables Vu Pham and Dell
Mercey. We thank the entire staff
of the Huron OPP for their
excellent work on March 8, and the
work they do every day.
The statement OPP commissioner
Julian Fantino gave on the day of
Officer Pham’s funeral sums up how
we feel. He praised the heroic effortof these two officers and stated:“Were it not for the actions of these
officers to put an end to the situation,
it could and would have been a lot
worse.”
It is unfortunate that the actions of
one man have rippled across
communities and created so much
grief to so many families. It is with
heartfelt sadness we offer our
condolences to Heather Pham andher children. Their loss of a greathusband and father has profoundly
changed their lives.
We are still shocked and saddened
by the tragic events that unfolded
that day and will forever remember
the sacrifices and protection
provided.

them if they cheered when Canada
scored the winning goal and the
children showed how they cheered.
Emily related this to the cheering for
Jesus on Palm Sunday.
The adults will be joining the
Sunday School in the assembly hall
for Palm Sunday. The children were
divided along with the congregation
and sang the song, “Praise Ye the
Lord”. Everyone said the prayer
with Emily leading.
Emily introduced the guest
speaker, Michele Hansen from
Huron Women’s Shelter Second
Stage Housing and Counselling
Services. She also thanked the
church for the support it has given
through the past years. She
presented a plaque to the
congregation for their support.
The next hymn, “O Master Let Me
Walk” was followed by the receiving
of the offering, the prayers for the
world and the singing of The Lord’s
Prayer, the last hymn, “May the God
of Hope,” the commissioning and
benediction and the singing of the
“Three-Fold Amen”. Everyone was
invited for coffee and to visit with
Michele.

In honour
Flags across Huron County, and Ontario, flew at half-mast
last week in honour of fallen OPP Provincial Constable Vu
Pham. Schools throughout the Avon Maitland School Board,
like Blyth Public, shown here, also recognized a moment of
silence for Pham, his family, his friends, and his co-workers.
