Rebecca Elizabeth is looking to
add Miss World winner to her
resume, but not for the reasons one
might think.
Elizabeth, a former resident of
Brussels, will be competing in the
Ontario Miss World competition,
which runs March 19-21, but the
pageant isn’t typical.
“Unlike other pageants, Miss
World isn’t based on beauty and
figure,” Elizabeth said. “It’s more
about your charity experience, your
personality, where you come from
and what you’ve achieved.”
The Ontario Division of the
competition is held at 1 King Street
in Toronto.
The pageant’s motto is “Beauty
with a Purpose,” which also serves
as one of the groupings within the
competitions.
“There are four fast-track
competitions,” Elizabeth explained.
“There’s Miss Entrepreneur, which
is won by whomever raised the most
money for children’s charities; the
interview competition; the talent
competition; and the Miss Beauty
with a Purpose competition, which
goes to whomever has the most
charity and life experience.”
The top six contestants in Toronto
move on to Vancouver in May for the
national competition.
“It’s the same process, but it’s
harder because you’re against the
best in the country,” Elizabeth said.
The winners at the national level
tour for six months, sharing their
experiences before going to Vietnam
in November for the world
competition.
The competition, according to
Elizabeth, doesn’t really foster
materialism.
“There is no material award for
winning,” she said. “You get the
typical sash, the crown, the flowers
and the glamour photos, but none of
the girls are in it for that.”
The real prize is being afforded the
opportunity to travel the world
and help people, according to
Elizabeth.
“[Winners of the competition] get
the chance to go and work with
charities,” she said. “The girls travel,
and get to see the different way
societies work. Some of our
competitors, for example, have gone
to Haiti to help there this year. It is
emotionally and morally building.”
To get ready for the competition,
Elizabeth has had to prepare both

March Break! Yippee! Time to get
the bikes out, play road hockey,
sleep in until noon, clean your room
at your speed, have sleepovers and
just have time to do the things you
want to do. Ah March break.
The senior crowd were in a
dancing mood at BMG Community
Centre on Saturday night. Gloria and
Keith Wilbee had their star players
with them to get the dancing feet
going. Don Chesher, Mary, Earl and
Joseph Flynn knew the tunes and
kept them going as the dancing
crowd enjoyed the evening of good
music and dance.
The Optimist Club is gearing up
for their fun night on Saturday. It’s
because of this community support,
the club is able to do so many nice
things that improve our village.
Next Saturday, March 27, if you’d
like a different venue for your
morning coffee, come to the United
Church for Muffin Morning,
between 10 and 11:30. A fresh
muffin comes with your coffee for a
toonie and then buy a variety to take
home.
Bev Brown says, “Hello”. She’s
well settled into Greenwood Court in
Stratford, but still misses all the
folks from Brussels.
The snow is going away so nicely,
it’s hard to imagine that it could
come again.
Daylight Savings Time slipped in
on a few folks. One fellow we know
still had his watch on old time
Monday, or at least that was the
excuse for being a little tardy.
It’s Grandgirl time here, so I’m
getting help from Jill at this moment
as she waits patiently, or not, to get
her nails painted green. We already
have the shamrock tattoos on,
temporary ones, so she really, really,
really needs the green polish on now.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
