The Brussels Atom Rep Bulls are heading back to Port
Carling for the fifth game in their OMHA semi-final playoff
series. Port Carling won the first two games at home, only
for Brussels to come roaring back, winning the next two in
Brussels. They took Saturday’s game by a score of 2-1 and
Sunday’s game by a score of 5-4 in overtime. (Vicky Bremner

The Brussels Atom Reps squared
off on home ice on Saturday against
Port Carling. It was a tough battle
for both teams.
There was no score after the first
period. It was late in the second
period when Port Carling got one
past the Brussels defence and goalie
Derrick Waechter to take a 1-0 lead.
With 1:03 left on the clock, Logan
Kellington accepted a pass from
Wyatt Machan and Mitch McKee to
tie it up.
In the third period, both teams
took numerous shots on the net, and
around the net to try and take that
all-important lead. With just 2:08
left, Kellington managed to find that
weak spot on Port Carling to make it
2-1. He was assisted by Noah
Terpstra and Delayna Smith.
Brussels won this game three and
looked forward to game four in
Brussels, Sunday.
The stands were full of fans
choosing to watch game four,
Sunday, then take in Canada’s gold
medal game. On behalf of the
players and coaches, thank you for
your support.
In the first period, it was Port
Carling who again took the lead.
They scored again early in the
second.
At 7:12, Kellington made his way
to the net to get Brussels on the
board. He was assisted by Machan.
In the third period, Port Carling
scored early to make it 3-1. Then,
they made it 4-1.
It didn’t look good for Brussels.
But at 8:54, Smith scored
unassisted. With 2:28 left Terpstra
found the back of the net thanks to a
pass from Ben Newell. Things were
starting to look up.
At 1:04, Coach Vern called a time
out. He pulled Waechter to add the
sixth man out front. His plan
worked.
With just 0:46 left, Terpstra again
nailed the net to tie it up. This time,
he had help from Kellington and
Smith. The crowd went
wild.
During the ten-minute sudden
death overtime period, the puck
went from stick to stick and end to
end. Newell passed to Terpstra who
flipped it in to take the win.
Goalie Waechter was solid in net
for both games. He had great help
from his defence of Avery McArter,
Brett Stevenson, Newell and
McKee.
Game five will be in Port Carling
this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Rumour
has it there will be several new
hairdos in time for this game.
Many thanks to fans who
volunteered to work the clock and
keep the game sheets.

Blyth Junior Broomball held
its banquet on Sunday, Feb. 21 at
the Blyth Community Centre.
It was great to see a large
crowd gathered to enjoy a
bountiful potluck supper. Extra
tables needed to be set out as the
banquet attendance was so large
this year.
Blyth junior broomball has
been run by a new committee for
the 2009-2010 season.
Committee members are: Art and
Chas Bos, Glenda deBoer, Mary
Ann Drost and Richard and
Patricia Roetcisoender. It has
been a year of learning and the
year went by very quickly with
just some minor hurdles along
the way. Jann VanMassenhoven
will join the committee next
season, and anyone interested in
joining the committee is more
than welcome.
A welcome edition to our
broomball league is the new
website designed by Glenda
deBoer that helps to link all the
broomball families with ongoing
information in our Central-West
region. Special thanks was
mentioned to Marilyn Whitfield,
Charlene Hakkers, Lois Reinink
and Lissa Kolkman for their
fundraising efforts that help to
keep the cost of this sport
affordable.
Following the potluck supper,
awards were handed out. Blyth
junior broomball is lucky to have
a great group of dedicated
coaches to help make the season
a fun, yet learning experience for
the kids.
Rob Kolkman and Dan Hoggart
coached the Rollers PeeWee
team. Most improved players
were Shannon Dale and Chandler
Wilts; while most dedicated went
to Aaly Broda and Reece Potter.
Chas Bos, Fred deBoer and
Ken Logtenberg coached the
PeeWee Dynamites. Most
improved awards were given to
Darcy VanMassenhoven and
Jamie Eckert, while most
dedicated went to Kaitlin Bos
and Logan Forbes.
The Bantam girls were coached
by Jerry Bremner and Cheryl
Souch. Most improved Bantam
player was Melissa VanSchaik,
while most dedicated went to
Kendall Black-McNee.
The Bantam boys were coached
by Jeff Roetcisoender and Mike
VanMassenhoven. They chose
two most dedicated players Scott
Jefferson and Matthew Terpstra
to win the Bantam boys awards.
Kim and Nora Eckert coached
the midget girls and they chose
two most improved players,
Rebecca Chalmers and Courtney
Hymers.
Gord Stute and Matt Nair
coached the midget boys and
chose the two most dedicated
players as Murray Dale and Tyler
Hallahan.
Congratulations to each and
very award winner. Choosing the
awards are difficult as Blyth has
some very strong and dedicated
players who make our league
very proud. Broomball families
are encouraged to keep checking
the website to stay tuned for next
season’s broomball registration
in August.
