Brussels Ball Park project. Since the park is in the centre of
town, the Optimist Club decided it was time for a face lift
and is going ahead with a $75,000 project which consists of
landscaping, some new fencing, work to
existing dugouts, 2 new lights and a new pavilion.
We are now looking for auction items for our silent and live auction.
This is only made possible with your generous donations that we
always receive in our small but mighty community. Thank you.

Public Welcome
Stop and smell the roses
It was Family Fun Night at Brussels United Church on Saturday and partaking in some arts
and crafts were Amanda Morrison and Justin Morrison. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Well yippee and hip hip hurrah!
The 21st Olympic games in
Vancouver were made in Canada.
Red and white clothing adorned
many bodies while Canadian flags
flew across our whole country,
trying to indicate the pride we felt
for the athletes.
More television viewing hours
were racked up in those last
seventeen days than normal, for
many folks. The live shots from
other Canadian cities, Cole Harbour
and Kandahar were exciting.
The organizers should be very
proud of their efforts. Their hours
and years of preparation were
obvious to the world. The people at
the games, at Whistler and in
Vancouver were enjoying the mood
of celebration and co-operation.
Pictures of parents and Olympians
showed the real emotions of the
moment.
So 14 gold medals, several
moments to remember and a
priceless amount of Canadian pride
will be the legacy of Vancouver
2010.
Do you recall the Ray Stevens
song about the squirrel? We had our
own version last week.
We infrequently use the stove in
the basement so when Ralph went to
give it a wee poke he got a surprise
instead. A shuffle of ashes indicated
a rodent was asleep in the stove.
Further questioning showed a slow
squirrel that knew to get just out of
reach. It also knew to bite, yes the
work gloves were on, as it kept just
out of reach. An open door policy,
with nuts available, was started but
each time the stove home was
checked, a shuffle and a nip finished
the dance.
Assuming the poor thing was sick
and unable to move much we left the
stove door open. Mistake. On rising
one bright morning, I heard articles
fall in Ralph’s office and as I looked
to the kitchen I saw a black tail head
into the living room. Here was the
“sick” squirrel in robust health going
from window to window at warp
speed looking for the escape route.
All I had to do was open the front
door and stay out of the road. Ahhhh
– our hunting season was short and
successful.
The season of Lent is here. The
Anglicans had the pancakes all ready
to go on Tuesday as folks dropped
into their cosy basement to meet
friends and have their tummies filled
to busting. Lent welcomes this first
indication that spring may come.
Ash Wednesday sets up the time for
Christians to think about life as we
celebrate it. If taken seriously Lent is
a 40-day look at our history and how
we are living it now.
Friday, March 5 is World Day of
Prayer. This day, people all over the
world gather for education and
prayer, all using the same format and
each year prepared by a different
country. Each community in our area
select their place to gather and be
part of this world-wide event. On
Friday at 2 p.m. Brussels folk
gather at the Anglican Church. Join
us.
Enjoy these nice days of March.
By now, Betty G.W.
