HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-02-11, Page 2February is such a neat month – all tucked into 28 days with weather that is so variable that at some point everyone is pleased at least once. And so we move on. This is birthday time in our circle, a very nice way to break up the winter. Joan Jacobs quietly added a year to her life last week while Ken Graber and Jack Cardiff are getting older next week. My brother Clif in Edmonton has shared my birthday, Feb. 14 for yearsnow. As the years go by we havemore time to appreciate life itself.Birthdays are a good time to take amoment to review what life hasoffered and just how we’ve spent theyears gone by. While the candles aremelting, that’s a great time to bethankful for all the friends andfamily who are the ones who really make this life so great. The Parkwood staff in London is still humming. Music was made on fifth floor for everyone’s enjoyment. It was a beautiful sunny day for the United Church choir to make a road trip to check on the vocal chords of one of its members. Edna Pearson is missing from the choir, so 12 folks headed south to let her know she was missed and to see if she could still sing. She can. Everyone enjoyed the time together, especially the other patients in Parkwood who were quiteimpressed that our folks would drivethere just to sing for them. The Jutzi family are thrilled thatTyler is safe and sound in Milan,Italy. He flew there last Saturday asan exchange student in the WilfridLaurier business program.Tyler will attend Universita CarloCattaneo until June to complete his last semester in Business, the only Waterloo student there. What an honour and what an experience. Way go to Tyler! Winter is a good time to learn new things – be it knitting, card games or cooking. Time is available, extra jobs are limited and a mental boost is a good thing. The Culture Club reports that Jim Armstrong is the authority on chicken wings and I’m sure he would be more than pleased to giveyou tips whenever you feel a needfor wings.Take care of yourself.Bye now, Betty G.W.PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2010. Continued from page 1 But in a memo from Gary Long, chief administrative officer for North Huron, council heard that that municipality’s lawyer feels that it is in North Huron’s dis- cretion whether it wants to extend service beyond its boundaries and that if other municipalities use those services, they would, by implication be accepting the price schedule for services offered by North Huron. “The problem is that North Huron has said many times that it would continue to provide fire coverage despite the end of the agreement,” noted councillor Mark Beaven. The dispute has prevented the division of the assets of the Blyth fire department. Meanwhile Michie explained that the Blyth department was in a deficit of more than $26,000 at the end of 2009 and there wasn’t enough money to pay the honorariums of the firefighters. Council immediately approved a motion to pay its 20 per cent share of the deficit. Council did receive a cheque or $91,825 for its share of the Wingham fire station. Council also received a letter from Howick Twp. complaining about $21,046 departure fee levied against the Wingham board by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. The letter argued that the departments are really being reorganized. By Jo-Ann McDonald Folks at the Brussels Legion are starting February slowly with just a few activities at the Branch this week. The Cadets met Tuesday evening, the pipe band practised Thursday evening and the dart league played as usual. There was a great bunch on hand to enjoy the evening. The first-place team was Catrina Josling, Penny Reynolds and Gord Jacklin. In second were Deb Cann and John Harrison. The high shot was by Gord with 112 and the high start was by Deb with 75. The honours for second skunk of the season goes to Roger McHardy, Deb Burch and Sharon Robbins. Darts are every Thursday night at 8 p.m. All are welcome. The Friday night supper of pork chops was enjoyed by over 50 hungry diners. This week will be roast beef. There were 11 tables of euchre players on hand Saturday. The first- place team was Rita and Verna with 73 points. Stuart and Lois Chamney placed second with 71 points and third place went to Glen and Eileen Sellers with 69 points. The low prize of the day went to Willis and Betty with only 46 points. The lone hand prizes went to Kathy Driscoll for the ladies and Glen Zehr for the men. Euchre is every two weeks at 1 p.m. The Branch welcomes Emily Warwick as part-time bartender. We wish Jacqui DeLauria all the best in her move and her future endeavours. Don’t forget the wings, fries and meat draws this weekend. Looking ahead there is a fundraising spaghetti dinner for Haiti next Wednesday by Brussels Public School Kid’s Care group.
