HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-02-04, Page 20Huron East council received correspondence at its Jan. 26 meeting from the Mid-Huron landfill site board outlining its difficult budget position for 2010. The deficit for the year came in just over $270,000 and Huron East’s share is 22.8 per cent, or $61,754.83. Huron East holds the third-largest share in the landfill, just behind Central Huron, 25.2 per cent and Goderich, 33.3 per cent. There were, however, some concerns from members of Huron East council who found this deficit to be a surprise coming from a venture that had always been a “money-maker.” MacLellan said that not only has the budget been balanced in past years, but that the landfill has been prosperous for the municipalities until now. “It hasn’t been balanced,” he said. “It’s always been a big money- maker.” The correspondence that came from landfill board secretary Larry McCabe said that the deficit was the result of Chamney Sanitation selling its business to Waste Management which subsequently deciding to haul its waste to its own landfill sites. Another factor, McCabe said, could have been the landfill’s new clear bag policy, which drastically reduced the amount of waste being brought into the site. One benefit of these factors has been the additional time this has bought the landfill as it will now last much longer than February, 2011, the initial end date set for the site. PAGE 20.
