Mildmay’s Miranda Lantz scored
eight goals in three weekend games as
the Saugeen Maitland Lightning
defeated Chatham 4-1 and swept
Bluewater by scores of 6-0 and 3-0.
A shorthanded goal by Lantz
midway through the second period of
the Chatham game tied the score at
one. Her other two goals came within
a minute of each other in the third.
Lexi Smith, Brussels tallied the fourth
marker for the Bolts.
Sunday afternoon the PeeWees
relentlessly attacked the Hawks from
Bluewater.
First period goals by Lantz, Carmen
Underwood, Clifford and Ciara Lark,
Mildmay got the Bolts started.
Smith’s goal was bookended by two
from Lantz, (back-to-back games with
a hattrick) to finish off the scoring.
Strong special teams also were a
factor in the win both on the penalty
kill and power play. Sammi Pruden,
Wroxeter and Mallory Hussey,
Howick Twp. – first game back from a
season-long injury put in strong
performances.
The second game of the day had
Reagan Kaufman, Durham open the
scoring from Pruden and Lark. Lantz
added two with assists going to Smith,
two and Tori Terpstra.
The Brussels PeeWee Reps have
had a busy few days of hockey.
Wednesday night, Jan. 20 they
hosted Zurich and got the shock of
their current hockey season – they
lost their first game.
Zurich scored the first goal and the
team seemed to just fall apart. They
tried to get the lead back, but to no
avail. Brussels lost 4-2.
Friday night was a different story.
They headed to Clifford to play an
8:30 p.m. game and hammered the
home team 14-0.
Racking up the points were Nic
Zwep with one,Austin Johnston and
Mitch Kellington each with a pair,
Colton Hastings with a hattrick, and
Wyatt Ducharme with five.
Providing the assists were
Kellington, Johnston, Zwep,
Ducharme, Hastings, Scott Dolmage
and Hayden TenPas. Matt McNichol
was solid in net.
The play of the game would go to
Johnston when in the first period, he
slipped and fell in a scramble at the
net, yet managed to score the goal
while on his back.
Sunday saw the boys faceoff
against Zurich in their arena. A
minute and a half into the game,
Johnston scored with the help of
Hastings and TenPas. The boys
pounded at the Zurich net all the
way through the game. The Zurich
goalie, Kim Hendrick, stopped
many shots. Those who slipped the
puck past her were Ducharme,
TenPas and Tim Waechter.
Keeping up a strong defence were
Zwep,Waechter, Luke McCutcheon,
Reece McArter and Sean Mitchell.
McNichol stopped several shots in
the game.
Brussels celebrated a 6-0 victory.
These two teams are apt to meet
again before the season is through.
Brussels has one more game
(against Howick) in the round-robin
series.
The PeeWee Reps played their last
game in their round-robin series
against Howick Jan. 27.
Kellington scored early to take the
lead, assisted by TenPas. Ducharme
scored 20 seconds later, unassisted.
Forty-five seconds later, Kellington
scored again, this time with the help
of Dolmage and Ducharme.
Howick managed to slip one in
not long after, to make the game
3-1, just two minutes into the
game.
Kellington scored his hattrick of
the night near the end of the first
period. He was helped by Ducharme
and Zwep.
In the second period, goals were
scored by TenPas and Waechter.
Racking up the assists were
Kellington, and TenPas.
Howick got one goal in the second
period.
Johnston scored one and
Ducharme netted his hattrick in the
third. Helping them get the puck to
the net were Waechter, Kellington
and Ducharme.
Howick got two quick goals in the
third period. It wasn’t enough as
Brussels took an 11-4 victory.
Brussels now waits to see who
they play in the next round.
PeeWee Reps suffer first loss
With a disappointing three losses
under their belt at the Mildmay
tournament held the previous
weekend, the Blyth Kings Midget
boys travelled to Mildmay on
Wednesday, Jan. 27 for their latest
broomball game.
In the absence of the team’s
regular goalie, Tyler O’Rourke was
bold enough to put on the goalie
gear and stand in net for the game.
Both teams played a strong first half.
The play moved up and down the
ice, with the defence doing an
excellent job at clearing the ball out
of their end. This hard work helped a
short-staffed Blyth team stay in the
game and really limited Mildmay’s
shots on net. At half time the game
was all tied up with no goals scored
by either team.
In the second period Mildmay
took a hard shot from the blueline
and the ball sailed past several
players to land in Blyth’s net.
Five minutes later Blyth’s Greg
Roetcisoender gained control of the
ball and scored to tie it.
Less than a minute later Mildmay
scored and took back the lead with a
hard windup shot from the face-off
circle.
With three minutes left on the
clock, Blyth had a man advantage
after Mildmay received a penalty.
Blyth pulled their goalkeeper to try
and tie the game. In spite of their
best effort, Mildmay was able to kill
the penalty and Blyth couldn’t get
another goal.
Blyth earned a penalty with less
than half a minute left in the game.
Mildmay outran Blyth’s last man
back and sealed their victory with
another goal with only four seconds
left on the clock. It was a
disappointing 3-1 loss for the Blyth
Kings.
Lightning has winning weekend
The Brussels Atom Reps
confronted Zurich Jan. 31 for the last
of their round-robin with them and
Howick. It was a tough battle with no
score at the end of the first period.
It was early in the second when
Mitch McKee scored with the help of
Noah Terpstra and Avery McArter.
Delayna Smith scored her goal of the
game early in the third period. She
was assisted by Terpstra and Kailey
Wheeler.
Four minutes later, Zurich
squeaked one in to make it 2-1. Less
than a minute later, Zurich scored
again to tie it up.
The pressure was on. Wyatt
Machan scored the winning goal with
seconds left on the clock. He was
assisted by McArter.
The Reps had Wheeler, Terpstra,
McKee, Jarron Thompson and Brett
Stevenson joining them from the
Local League.
Brussels will face Zurich in the
next round of WOAA playdowns,
Friday night in Zurich and Sunday
back in Brussels.

OUT OF THE HACK
On a sad note the Wingham Golf Club lost a great
member this past week, Andy Ste. Marie who will be
missed dearly. The club offers sincere sympathy to
Andy’s family.
