(Shawn Loughlin photo) The weather in the month of January cannot be complained about too much. We experienced mild temperatures, not that much snow, and many sunny days. Then the last week, the bitter cold set in, and the wind and snow of Thursday brought everyone back to the reality of what winter can be like. The morning drive with the bus wasn’t the best and at times, terrible. The weather seemed to clear for the drive back from Seaforth, but the drive back out was scary at times. I spoke with other folks, who also had scary drives that day, and we can all be thankful we made it home safe and sound. February is the shortest month of the year, and of course, we have Groundhog Day. We will soon know if it will be an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Don and Monique Baan and children Ryan, Adam and Emma have returned home from a great week in Florida. They were there, along with the rest of Monique’s family, in celebration of her parents’, John and Julia Van Ostaayen of Stayner, 40th wedding anniversary. There were 16 members of the Van Ostaayen family enjoying the holiday at the Disney Resort near Orlando. They spent their days visiting the Animal Kingdom, Epcot Centre, Magic Kingdom and the renamed MGM Studio, Hollywood. They report that the weather wasn’t the warmest, but it was dry and they didn’t have to shovel anything. Ed McClure has returned from a 12-day vacation to Los Cabos in Mexico. He reports that you can be guaranteed wonderful weather and he wasn’t disappointed. He spent time making new friends, fourwheeling, enjoying water sports and went on one short tour of the area. He went to the Walmart of Mexico and reports that it is nothing like at home. The area of his resort was less touristy and he enjoyed the “quieter” atmosphere. Dominican Republic was the destination for many Brussels area folks. Greg and Sharon Wilson, Bill and Carol Stevenson, Bob and Laura Bridge, Jill, Amy and Kelly spent a great week in the Punta Cana area of the Dominican. They report having three beautiful days of sun and three days of mixed cloud and sun. The cloudy days fooled some of them as they were the days that they got a little sunburned. They had no rain, great food and a wonderful time among friends. Congratulations to Fred Uhler on reaching the milestone of 65 years. A special celebration was held for Fred at the Uhler home on Saturday evening with over a dozen or so of his friends and family. A delicious dinner and a fun evening of reminiscing was enjoyed by all in attendance. The Cunningham/Uhler family gathered earlier this month to celebrate the milestone birthday of Anna Cunningham. Anna turned 90 and her family enjoyed a dinner and afternoon with her. Anna’s friends and neighbours also had a gathering to help Anna celebrate her special day. Congratulations to Chris Blake and Erin Beuerman on their engagement this past week. A wedding is being planned for September I hear. Matt and Cheryl Lee hosted the Lee family and the Thompson family on Sunday for the birthday party of their youngest boy Sheldon. Sheldon is now two years old and enjoyed his visit with Grandmas and Grandpas and of course his many presents. Members of the family played outside for the afternoon, before enjoying birthday dinner. Happy Birthday Sheldon.
