Many of you know she has been crocheting sleeping mats for poor countries around the world. Getting the mats to those in need can be an expensive and frustrating task. However she has made contact with a person in London at the St. John the Evangelist Church who will be taking her mats to Mississauga on Tuesday to be included in a container of relief items going to Haiti through the Crossworld organization. These mats are made from milk bags and June’s are crocheted from donations to Hullett Central Public School. An adult mat takes 250 bags while slightly fewer are needed for a child’s mat. I Googled sleeping mats the other day and found these bags are used to make a number of other items and the project has caught on all over Ontario and into Quebec. Seems a unique way to get these mats transported to use them as packing in crates. You might want to check out that website. June has had some help with this project from Helen Lee and suggests perhaps there may be others in the community who would be interested in helping. If so give June a call. NEWS FROM LONDESBORO By BRENDARADFORDCall 523-4296PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO A former member of the Londesborough United Church, Gary Jewitt of Clinton, was the guest speaker at the January meeting of the Londesborough UCW. Along with regular United Church Women attendees, several community folk were on hand to hear Gary’s presentation about a recent trip he made to Tanzania, Africa for Sleeping Children Around the World. Gary and his late wife, Crystal had been involved in this charitable organization for many years and Gary’s most recent trip was made in Crystal’s honour. Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) provides bedkits to children of any race or religion who will benefit the most. Most often these bedkits then are distributed to children in underdeveloped or developing countries. The contents of a bedkit vary from country to country depending upon local needs. Typically a kit contains a mat/mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket, towel, clothes, school supplies and mosquito netting if needed. None of the $35 for the cost of a kit is used for administration costs. SCAW will give their 1,000,000th bedkit to a needy child this year. Contents of a kid are made/collected in the country for which the kit is intended. That way the local economy also benefits. Transportation costs are eliminated as well. Children who receive a bedkit are photographed with their gift and the photo sent to the donor. Anyone wishing to make a donation to this group might contact Gary for details. Gary showed slides of Tanzania, the children with whom he came in contact and also of the safari he went on. Spirit of the New Year was the theme for the time of devotion that evening led by Barb Bosman, Jane Hoggart, Lena Nesbitt and Rena Kolkman. Corinthians 13: 1-13 was the scripture passage and the entire group sang, God Will Take Care of You. The M&S allocation was set at $1,800 for the year and it was decided to make turkey and beef frozen pies as a fundraiser. The ladies are encouraging the entire congregation to make a donation to the food box in the narthex of the church during the month of February to benefit the Salvation Army. The community is invited to the World Day of Prayer Service on Friday, March 5.
